On view now: Joey Terrill ‘Chisme y Memorias’

In this new body of work, Terrill presents ten paintings that unfold as deeply personal narratives—part memoir, part social history—drawn from decades of lived experience within q***r, Chicano, and artistic communities.

As in his earlier work, Terrill’s practice remains rooted in autobiography, but here the tone is reflective and expansive, shaped by the artist’s recent milestone of turning seventy. The exhibition’s title, ‘Chisme y Memorias’, speaks to the intertwined nature of storytelling, gossip, remembrance, and community—an understanding that life itself is constructed through shared histories, relationships, and recollection.

Two central themes run throughout the exhibition: the rituals, grief, and resilience surrounding the AIDS crisis, and the artist’s enduring relationships—particularly with women—across friendships, family, and creative collaborations. Terrill positions himself neither as hero nor victim, but as a witness navigating love, loss, joy, and personal reckoning.

Marc Selwyn Fine Art is honored to announce the representation of New York-based artist Cynthia Talmadge, whose paintings, photographs, and installations explore the darker undercurrents of contemporary Americana and tabloid culture. Our representation is in collaboration with 56 Henry in New York.

Drawing on extensive historical research and blending fact with fiction, Talmadge creates psychologically charged narratives that examine heightened emotional states and their mass media representations. Often painted in her signature Pointillist technique, she constructs elaborate environments that possess the atmospheric quality of a distant memory or cinematic vision. Through subjects ranging from celebrity rehabilitation centers and funeral parlors to imagined diplomatic settings, Talmadge transforms private experiences of anxiety, loss, obsession, and desire into compelling spaces for collective reflection.

Talmadge was recently selected as the recipient of the Addison Artist Council’s 2027 Bartlett H. Hayes Jr. Prize, which includes a solo exhibition at the Addison Gallery of American Art (set to open September 2027), an accompanying publication, an artist residency, and the acquisition of her work.

The Hirshhorn Museum, Washington D.C., has also newly acquired two paintings by the artist for their collection.

Her work is included in the collections of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara; Columbia University, New York; the Mint Museum, Charlotte; and The Bunker, Palm Beach. She has presented solo exhibitions at Marc Selwyn Fine Art, Los Angeles; 56 Henry, New York; Carl Kostyál, Milan; Bortolami, New York; and Soft Opening, London, among others. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at various venues including Office Baroque, Antwerp; Mana Contemporary, Jersey City; and Jeffrey Deitch, Los Angeles.

“All nebulae and voids, forms torquing as in response to forces felt but unseen, the pieces collected here evidenced the ways in which DeFeo so improbably made shape into space. What was remarkable was how she performed this trick while simultaneously puncturing the pictorial illusion that it might otherwise leave unperturbed. Thick with marks, or kept naked apart from some central defining incident, these were evidently laboriously made works, forthrightly built and not conjured.”

‘Soul Sessions’, a career-spanning exhibition of works by artist, educator, and organizer Akinsanya Kambon (b. 1946, Sacramento, CA) is now on view across two venues in a collaboration between SculptureCenter and the Center for Art, Research and Alliances (CARA). This is the artist’s first survey exhibition presented in New York City.

This exhibition highlights Kambon’s decades-long practice across ceramics, paintings, drawings, and archival materials. Deeply informed by Kambon’s formal art training and political education, which includes serving as a Marine Corps infantryman and combat illustrator, Lieutenant of Culture for the Sacramento Chapter of the Black Panther Party, and co-founder of the Pan African Art Gallery with Susan Tama-sha Ross Kambon, the exhibition is a testament to the artist’s technical excellence, formal inventiveness, and lifelong dedication to struggles for Pan-African liberation.

Marc Selwyn Fine Art, in partnership with Almost Forgotten Women Artists, presents two artists from the AFWA archive - Hilda D. Levy and Betty Lane - opening Saturday, May 23, at Camden Annex in Beverly Hills.

Hilda D. Levy (1908–2001) was one of the first artists to be granted a solo exhibition by the renowned Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. An accomplished Abstract Expressionist working in Southern California during the mid-twentieth century, Levy has since fallen into relative obscurity. This exhibition marks her first solo presentation in fifty-eight years and seeks to restore her place within the history of American women artists and Abstract Expressionism.

Betty Lane (1907-1996) was an American painter who developed a distinctive visual language defined by clarity of structure, sensitivity to color, and a quiet but persistent emotional charge. Her paintings are marked by a sense of compositional restraint that gives way to an underlying intensity—an effect that lends even her most pared-down images a lasting presence. This presentation brings together eight paintings from 1929 to 1947, offering a focused look at her diverse practice.

Frieze New York 2026 opens today at The Shed. Marc Selwyn Fine Art and Ortuzar jointly present a solo booth of sculptures by Akinsanya Kambon (b. 1946, Sacramento, CA).

Kambon’s figurative ceramics are inspired by African deities, ancestral spirits, and historical figures, and are distinguished by his use of an adapted Japanese Raku firing technique. The artist approaches his kiln firings ceremonially, incorporating materials such as eucalyptus leaves and sawdust, which leave the resulting forms with richly textured, metallic surfaces.
