We asked our SOS what he wishes he knew starting out… here’s what he said 👇
1. It’s all about the client
Their experience from start to finish should be pleasant. Learning how to read people and match their energy results in a more comfortable experience for everyone.
2. Communication is key
Be clear before and during the session so you and the client stay on the same page.
3. The job is a great experience AND a quality product.
Deliver what the client wants. This means no matter how I feel about a project as long as its recorded to the best of my ability, they had a great experience, and they have a quality product to walk away with, I’ve done my job. Don’t overstep into producing unless asked.
4. Recording is only about 5% of what an engineer actually does
95% of the job is troubleshooting gear and software issues. You could have the perfect set up, but an issue is bound to come up sooner or later.
5. First impressions matter
Getting a first session with a client can be the easy part, but getting them to come back is another thing. Keep clients coming back by knowing your gear, solving problems, and creating a great experience.
And as a bonus
6. Be humble
There’s always someone who knows more than you. This goes for the most seasoned veterans as well. Each and every engineer has their own style, method, and audio Chain. Be humble and learn how to both listen to critique and accept when you’re wrong.
