Since 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution guarantees all American women the right to vote and legally recognizes women as equal citizens. Today, the US celebrates Women’s Equality Day.
Unfortunately, as we are reminded every year, we still have a long way to go
I was listening to Fail Better. Last weeks interview featured Kathleen Hanna . She was sharing this interesting story about the Spice Girls … She talks about how she was watching a friends Kid of hers coming up with these dance moves to one of the Spice Girls song and Kathleen says to herself “stop being such a snob, if I was a Kid and I had this, it’s better than the Red Hot Chili Peppers, you know what I’m saying, this Kid isn’t listening to music that she’s a s*x doll, she’s listening to music as she hangs out with her friends.”
Which brings me to Adele : the same day, I was listening to the podcast, at Munich Night 8, Adele talks about how when she grew up, she adored the Spice Girls and how inspiring they were to her. Adele’s voice is beyond powerful and beautiful and she transcends to a whole new world and takes the audience on an emotional journal that cannot be expressed in words.
My point being is: representation matters.
Back in 2018, when we decided to make the documentary series EMPOWERED, that was the whole goal.
I can tell you, it’s been a real struggle getting this series on the air because I’ve been told: these women aren’t famous enough, aren’t interesting enough, aren’t something enough. WTF?!?!?
Today, it’s not just about celebrating this day but it’s more about recognising the impact of equality can have in our society, no matter how famous you are or not! Representation matters. PERIOD.
One thing’s for sure....if there wasn’t a Kathleen Hanna, there might not have been the Spice Girls, and if it weren’t for the Spice Girls, we might not have Adele...and I sure cannot wait to see who’s on the horizon to change this world.
Be bold, be empowered.
PS: Thanks Adele for looking right into the camera and singing with your heart and soul.
