On America's 250 birthday, Nick Anderson and Mike Luckovich, both widely syndicated and Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonists, provide a collection of the finest in contemporary narrative imagery. These broad thinkers pay acute attention to the daily news that most of us recoil from these days. They make us laugh, and perhaps summon our resolve to be the change, as we look at our own circumstances. Their mastery of this cross-generational American tradition makes a most remarkable journal of the absurdities of America at 250.

At once grounded and ethereal, Marilyn Gates-Davis’ creative dimensionality on canvas provides us all we need to conjure the change.

“I paint the abandoned structures in full detail, grounding them in their current state,” she says, adding “over these surfaces, I overlay figures drawn on vellum—ghostlike images of residents rendered in loose black ink.”

Artists Marilyn Gates-Davis and Sabiyha Prince chronicle black communities in Washington D.C. since the city’s inception. During the Great Migration, southern sharecroppers joined the burgeoning federal workforce and became Washington’s dominant demographic. By the 1970s the nation’s capital became a hub of African American culture and activism. Today, real estate development and gentrification have uprooted the city’s long-established neighborhoods.

Their echoes are found in the tender reminiscence of Gates-Davis and Prince, with fragmented images and ghost-like figures. The artists’ overlays are gently placed on top of the city today, and ask us to examine the disappearance of its history.

This may be one of the most remarkable stories you'll hear: a stunning finding by Robert Brigham, adopted at birth, now a renowned Vietnam War historian, who discovered well into his career that his biological father was a Marine combat photographer whose widely known work Brigham unknowingly studied and taught for decades. It turns out father and son are also bound by the foster system that placed each of them in early childhood.
