Box Art Dreams

Box Art Dreams BoxArtDreams started as a wearable art brooch circa 1985 that I sold on the streets of Soho NY, it quickly became a collectable worldwide.

The concept evolved to large scale commissioned art work utilizing video and light in a three dimensional setting.

Circa 1990's the beginning of a one of a kind series "BoxArtTriptych" and the first one is "After Hopper." The idea of taking these already made clear plexiglass boxes and repurposing them for my artistic endeavors constantly provided a platform to invent within. Coming from a background in the fine art of theater where I was influenced by the director Tom O'Horgan and the set designer Robin Wagner I found my own voice and created hundreds upon hundreds of these tabloids eventually using my own photographs as the background. The paintings of Edward Hopper inspired the creation presented here.

I was recently interviewed by Lisa M. Berman of Sculpture To Wear Gallery in relation to my career as the definitive BoxArtist. It is an honor to be able to talk about the roots of these creative ideas which originally I called ©1985Still Life Creations and changed to ©1987BoxArt when I transformed the three dimensional brooches into a 2x2x1 inch acrylic box. My first thought was "this is an endless idea." I keep inventing and now my newest work is called ©2000BoxArtDreams. Light, Video, face mounted images, three D printed figurines, all placed within a large black cube mounted on steel pedestals.

Circa 1989 I made a series of limited oversized time pieces which I named the concept ©1989MarcTime. In all I created about two dozen different ideas and one collector bought half of them. I always thought back then if only there was a way to make the entire box art light up as well as the image be able to move than I would have something I could take to the wholesale market. Fast forward to now and look at what all the major digital companies are making from IWatch to Samsung and beyond. Guess I was ahead of my time....no pun intended.

I am the originator of BoxArtDreams which started in 1985 as "Still life Creations" and evolved to become wearable three dimensional brooches for the lapel. Utilizing a 2x2x1 inch acrylic box and transforming its purpose into a safe environment for photographs and figurines to interact with became the focal point and point of view. The concept set the stage for an endless dialogue between the wearer and those who responded to the unique shape and gave way to conversation about the art work. Breaking down another wall between individuals was and is part of the idea to this day.
