WEEK ONE ARTISTS HAVE ARRIVED!

Five projects. Stories of hidden rooms, buried grief, and hard-won freedom. This is how we begin the summer at The Ground Floor:

BELLY DANCING LESSONS | Borna Barzin, directed by Pirronne Yousefzadeh
High schoolers form a secret belly dancing studio in a bakery basement in 1980s Iran.

DANDELION | Becca Blackwell, in collaboration with Madeleine George
A comedy about what we need to let blow away in a world obsessed with freedom but terrified of how to get there.

I HAD A BROTHER ONCE | Adam Mansbach, directed by Kevin Coval, in collaboration with Josh Begley, DJ Frane, Vivien Mansbach, Nino Moschella, and Martín Perna
In the shadow of his brother's su***de, a man is forced to reimagine the person he thought he knew.

IT COMES WITH THE BUILDING | Harrison David Rivers, Jacob Yandura & Rebekah Greer Melocik
Theo and Henry chase a fresh start in NYC — until their dream home turns out to be a nightmare. (A two-week residency through June 28.)

SOLITARY (working title) | Cat Brooks
Three Black women forge sisterhood, humanity, and resilience inside the walls of solitary confinement.

These artists are spending the week developing, collaborating, and building work that will shape the future of American theatre. Follow along as they transform our West Berkeley campus into a laboratory for bold new stories.

We're thrilled to announce the artists and change-makers joining The Ground Floor's 2026 Summer Residency Lab — Berkeley Rep's incubator for the creation and development of trailblazing new theatre.

Now in its 14th year, the Lab brings together over 100 local and national artists to develop 20 new works over an intensive four weeks (June 15–July 12) — exchanging ideas, taking creative risks, and building artistic community. Selected from a record-breaking 1,300 applications, this summer's cohort centers California voices, communal joy, and powerful new narratives.

Head to the link in our bio to meet this year's artists and sign up for The Ground Floor newsletter — your alert for public sharings and updates.

We got a lunchbox… steeped with love from Elaichi Co.!
THE LUNCHBOX has been celebrating the Berkeley community by highlighting local South Asian businesses and the people behind the food that makes us feel at home.

Our dabbawallahs stopped by Elaichi Co. to pick up a chai on their route. Because every busy dabbawallah deserves a perfect cup of chai on the go.

Elaichi Co. reminds us why chai is more than a drink; it’s a ritual, a source of comfort, and a little piece of home in every cup. The cast and crew of THE LUNCHBOX have been loving every sip!
