I started this project by documenting combat training exercises. It was chaotic and deafening with all the gunfire and yelled commands. And once the exercises have ended, the explosive noise is replaced with the ambient sounds of swirling sands and random distant doors closing from the desert wind gusts. Range 220 becomes a ghost town once again. I find myself as an observer in this paradox.

During the mortgage crisis, Black families were 70% more likely to be targeted by predatory lenders than white families. Many of those homes were located on land with a history of redlining. Redlining is a practice from the 1930s that prevented Black families from buying homes in certain neighborhoods and qualifying for home loans. Look at the Marin community as a perfect example and learn about the history that plays here in the Bay. This is a pattern of racial, residential segregation and disparate life outcomes in the Bay Area for many black families. Oakland has lost 30 percent of its Black population due to rising rents since 2000. Housing advocates worry a series of evictions are waiting for families who cannot pay rent due to job loss during the pandemic, that’s yet another hardship expected to disproportionately affect the Black population nationwide. Don’t let these communities get robbed by predatory lenders and literally not have the ability to pass wealth onto their families. Please read about Lloyd’s story and please donate what you can. I know these are hard times but anything can help. https://www.gofundme.com/f/warriors-house
Original post by you can find the link on her profile . The bank is trying to take my neighbors house. His house is an Oakland staple. His mom passed away last year and they found out there was a reverse mortgage in her name. They've been on this block for 50 years. I made a GoFundMe to hopefully raise the money he needs to get the bank of his back. Please share the link so we can hopefully get the attention of the warriors!!!

This is not a bday or special day at all. In fact it’s just another Monday night and you just got back from another 12 hr shift. You come in from the back door so you can change out of your scrubs and then help me put down our oldest kid. It’s our favorite time seeing mom getting back from work. Your hair is still in a braid and your eyes are at times bloodshot red but I can tell you’re needing that hug as bad as we do. Our feelings for you are beyond any words we could muster. I don’t care how mushy it sounds; I can own this.

We have been tested over these past weeks and have had a rollercoaster of times but having you by my side, My best friend, is really just another Monday.

I’m a pretty damn lucky dude. Love you tons and forever.

Btw, sorry for some of these photos I just can’t help myself.

I've been meaning to post this image of the activist, comedian and show host of the CNN awarded series “United Shades of America” - W Kamau Bell.

Before the shoot, we gave Kamau a couple ideas on wardrobe, to bring a variety of styles. He rolls up with a handful of black and gray shirts. I asked him, jokingly, “I see what you got here, but do you have anything in black?” He laughed and I said what you're rocking is actually perfect! And it was— “I hella heart Justice.”
Couldn't ask for more and it really says it all about the man. I felt kinda bad we did the entire shoot all set in this box but he killed it. I can’t say enough great things about W Kamau. He is genuine, humble, and an incredibly kind guy, who happens to be hella funny! Honestly it's shoots like these where I meet such inspirational people that make me feel so darn lucky. Thank you Airbnb for allowing me to create and design this one and to have met one of my new favorite people.

Today is my father’s birthday. For the past 4 years, my dad has been struggling with Parkinson’s. My mom now does mostly everything for my dad. My dad is very old school—never asked anyone for help or sympathy and he’s always kept his feeling to himself. Growing up in San Francisco I had a hard time relating to him. We didn’t see eye to eye on a lot of things but he has always been my number one supporter in my creativity. It was actually my dad who got me into photography. His Nikon F camera handed down. The same one he used as a military reporter in the Korean War. My dad built a darkroom in an old military cottage that was given to SF residents back in the day. It was mostly filled with cobwebs but it was there that I picked up something I felt my dad had never stopped having a deep passion for. I always struggled to get to know my dad. He came from a different time. His story is remarkable. His mother was the youngest of her 4 sisters and was taken from Philadelphia by her dad at around 5 years old to forcefully live with him in Paris. Her father became a successful businessman owning a company that built commercial refrigerators to then see it all taken away in WWII. It was the factory my great grandfather had built that my father and grandmother had to live on the top floor and rooftop while it was occupied by the N**i Germans. They could not show their faces at all during the occupation. Meanwhile her husband was still fighting in the war. I would hear how he traveled only at night by bicycle. These stories bewildered me because it’s so far removed from my upbringing. I thank my father and mom so much for giving our family all our opportunities and strength. Much love dad

Finally got around to sharing our newest lil guy, Indy Mars Spirandelli. He was born in the early morning of 7/11 at 12:38 am. Thi was a week and a half overdue. Thi was amazingly calm and we were our silly selves throughout. Our experience was nothing like our first—no driving through red lights or losing my s**t while Thi bled at the hospital waiting area. We look back and laugh and feel so much older. I mean “experienced”. Indy has now been home with us for almost a full week.. Atlas has been a fantastic big brother. He says things like “Ohh so cute!” and kisses him on the head. We wonder how long that will last. We’re truly cherishing every moment while half awake.😴 @ Alta Bates Summit Medical Center
