Japan Tour 2026: Wings of Song

UC Alumni Chorus is taking a “choral flight to Japan” in January 2026! In its 40-year history, UC Alumni Chorus has regularly traveled around the world. The “Wings of Song” tour is our first venture to Japan, and our first tour under the baton of present Music Director Dr. Paul Flight. In collaboration with emeritus director Dr. Mark Sumner and members of his Unitarian Universalist Society of San Francisco church choir, we will cross the Pacific with a selection of works of contemporary American and Japanese choral composers to share with other singers and audiences in Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto. The tour choir will perform at the “Sing for Joy: Kobe” Interkultur choral festival, and join local choirs for concerts in Shinjuku (Tokyo) and Kanagawa, as well as students at Kyoto Women’s University for a performance in a newly built hall on the university’s campus.

Join us on Friday, December 6, 2024, for “Rise & Shine,” a Christmas concert uniting hearts and voices for peace at the Ascension Cathedral in Oakland Hills. Featuring performances by the Ascension Cathedral Choir, Angelikki Youth Choir, and guest artists, including the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra, Kairos Youth Choir, and special guest members of the UC Berkeley Alumni Chorus, this event promises a night of inspiring and uplifting music. Part 1 – Sustaining UCCE – what’s to sustain?

Why sustain the student choral groups?
The choral groups at Cal have always been a significant part of the university experience. In the choral groups:
• as youngsters, away from home for the first time, we find a much needed center;
• through music old and new we connect with 400 years of our cultural heritage;
• we hear the amazing sound of applause for the first time;
• we entertain and serve our communities with wonderful music;
• we give voice to sounds that would otherwise not be heard;
• we learn to take and give direction;
• we develop intuitions for cooperation and teamwork;
• we escape from the competitive blur of formal coursework, and just sing;
• in a student-run organization, we take our first steps in the world of leadership;
• as young adults, we meet people who will remain our friends for life;
• as couples, we meet and start families;
• we glue bits of the past together to make a base for the future.
