Gaffer had the opportunity to be the SF unit gaffer for Showtime show called Super Pumped last fall. To help keep costs low for a night exterior Matt came up with a creative plan to light the backgrounds without having to run a bunch of distro everywhere. His lighting team placed a 5k fresnel and a skypanel s360 in the back of a stake bed truck along with a 7000w generator. The lamps never left the truck and Matt could choose to use the hard source or the softer source to light the background. When production flipped the world the stake bed would move to the opposite block to light the new background. The blurry photo of technicians pushing a skypanel up the steep hill of the streets of SF truly embodies the hectic night that it was!

M40 grip truck truck bounce! 🤗 Gaffer and key grip needed a quick way to keep the ambient consistent through this office window. The truck worked two ways, as a flag to stop all the pings from cars and random skips off the construction site across the street as well as providing a white surface to bounce consistent and controllable source of off. Two 800 jo lekos as back edges and a soft source LED Litemat 8 inside to wrap the window light. Lighting it up for one of our favorite DPs 🙏🙌

M18 in a 8x8 half grid book light with LCD. Key Grip put 12x12 solid T bones as siders to really make sure there is no spill. He says 8x8 siders never cover enough of the spill especially when the 8x8 diff source is stemmed up significantly. Gaffer

New Blog post up now on easy ways to always order the right gear. Check it out!

As a rental house we see tons of equipment requests every single day, as you can imagine this had made us strive to figure out how to do it better when ordering equipment for ourselves. Here are a few things we’ve found to be very helpful in ordering equipment.

Our Story

Bolt Lighting Rental was founded by Matthew Stouppe and Ryan Thomas in 2016. We’ve grown from our humble beginnings as owner/operators in 2011, working inside an old naval warehouse to now being Bolt Lighting Rental, a full service rental house in Berkeley, CA.

We started Bolt Lighting Rental after using our competitors equipment for years, deciding we could do better. The start was organization. We had watched it play out so many times, the equipment was on the truck, but no one could find it. We started with two very simple solutions: With every rental, the gear on the truck is always in the same place and it’s labeled! Such a simple idea, but no one was doing it. We did it and went the extra mile to make it look good.

Once that was taken care of we worked to figure out how we could streamline our basic operations. We had prepped trucks and equipment at other rental houses, we knew it was slow, inefficient, and costly. Now that our trucks were standardized we looked for a way to capitalize on that and eventually found iAuditor. This allowed us to create digital checklists for the trucks that would guide our prep techs through the process, create reports on what was missing, and help us increase efficiency by over 60%. With these cost-cutting measures, we now believe we have the competitive edge when it comes to pricing.

Finally, we just modernized the checkout process, from signing our rental agreements easily from your phone, to using software that allows us to see where every piece of our inventory is. We’ve done everything we can to create a positive experience from using Bolt as a vendor.
