Imagined Musically | 08 — Kundalini

शुभ नवरात्रि 🙏🌺

The awakening of Kundalini, the ascent of Shakti, and the union of energy and consciousness.

What better way to express Shakti’s longing to reunite with Shiva than through this bandish?

In the line “Sadarangile, pr**t ki r**t na jaane,” Sadarang is the composer’s signature. For this imagined interpretation, however, I chose to hear it as: “O Lord of infinite colours, I do not yet know the sacred ways of love.” 🙏✨

{Navaratri, Kundalini, Shakti, Shiva, Devi}

Sada Enna Hrudayadalli
ಸದಾ ಎನ್ನ ಹೃದಯದಲ್ಲಿ…

A Kannada Bhajan written by Sri Vijayadasa and composed by Shamacharya Joshi, a dear friend of my grandfather, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi.

During my grandfather’s younger days, when he would practise for 18–20 hours a day, Shamacharya ji would often accompany him on the tanpura.

My grandfather originally sang this composition, and it feels special to revisit it today, a small piece of a musical history that has been passed down to me ✨

Imagined Musically | 07 — Nadiya

“Morey Saiyaan Utarenge Paar,
Nadiya Dheere Baho…”

A timeless thumri carrying the old-world romanticism of our soil.

The romance, the longing, the imagery, the sheer simplicity of expressing love without ever actually saying it.

And somewhere between prem and viraha, the beloved begins to feel almost divine.

Perhaps that is the magic of thumri. How something as simple as waiting for someone can become an entire world of emotion, and how love can so effortlessly slip into devotion.

I imagined this one as a river carrying longing from one shore to another.

This iconic bandish in Raag Shyam Kalyan somehow as natural to remember as chai and pakode in the monsoon. ☕️
Pt. Kumar Gandharva’s version, with the ‘nyas’ on Rishab (Re), intriguingly came to mind, and I found myself trying it here.

Still overwhelmed by the love in Vaijapur yesterday. ❤️

There’s something about performing in our towns and villages. The warmth feels so pure, the love so unfiltered, and the connection so real.

I hope to keep taking Indian music to more people, in more places, and to every corner of India and beyond!

Decided to bring this one back from last year, but in one full piece this time. 🎧🙏.

A lot of you have joined this page since last Ganesh Chaturthi, so it felt right to share the complete, uninterrupted version of ‘Tuj Magato Mi Ata’ y’all. Wishing everyone a blessed and happy festive season. Ganpati Bappa Morya! 🌸✨

Imagined Musically | 06 — Radha

Shubh Krishna Janmashtami 🙏✨

My father had once explained to me the esoteric meaning behind the “Vimukh Shikhar Se” portion of Baje Muraliya Baaje : how turning the stream of consciousness, Dhara, inward becomes Radha.

Recently, I came across a clip of Osho Rajneesh speaking about the very same interpretation. It was fascinating to hear a thought that I had grown up with being expressed in a completely different context.

So, for this episode of Imagined Musically, I thought of bringing these two perspectives together.

Here’s a small snippet of “Baje Muraliya Baaje”, written by Pt. Narendra Sharma, composed by Shrinivas Khale and originally sung by my grandfather, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Lata ji
