This painting, oil on canvas board from 1968, was created by my grandfather, Joseph Guy Federico. Born in 1905, He immigrated to the U.S. from Sicily and spent his career as a tailor in the New York garment district, where he sown uniforms for WWII.

He lived in Brooklyn with his wife Adele who everyone call Dolly.

As an artist myself, I am captivated by the technical precision in this piece, particularly the way he captured the detail of the shirt—a skill born from a lifetime of understanding fabric, structure, and the exact way a garment is sewn. I am so grateful my mother who saved this painting and the easel which was passed down to me after he passed away in 1969.

What strikes me most about this painting is how he strove to live the American dream. My grandfather wasn’t a saint, but I loved him just the same. He loved visiting us grandchildren in the “country” in Holmdel .He saw me as an artist when I was just seven years old.

I would love to see a picture of your parents or grandparents too.
