What is a mahjong class at Mahj & Mingle like?

Our beginner class is structured to teach the foundation of American Mahjong using National Mahjong League rules. All students are provided with everything they need to participate at the studio as well as take-home handouts.

Class begins with introductions so people feel a bit more comfortable with the instructor(s) and table mates. Next, we move on with an set-by-step power-point learning the basics of what you need to play, tiles, the card, basic rules, and setting up.

Once we get to the setting up portion of presentation, we begin with hands-on guided play with the power-point following along. Your instructor(s) will help guide students through game-play.

Class ends with suggestions of ways to continue learning, opportunities to ask questions, check out our selection of sets and mahjong items in our mini-store, and are invited to hang around to observe or participate in open play.

Because we never want anyone to feel excluded due to financial restrictions, classes and open play are always free, however we always appreciate when people chip in to help us keep the studio maintained. We've seen places charge $60+ for class and $30+ for open play, and we find that downright ridiculous!

The next class is this Sunday, June 14. 2pm - 4/4:30. Classes are generally held on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Open play is every Sunday at either 2 or 5pm (see calendar for details.)

Open Play today (Sunday June 7th) Beginning at 2pm & ending whenever we're Mahj'd-out.

Some newer players seem to think that open play might be too overwhelming for a beginner. At least 1 teacher is always there to help. We promise, it's not scary at all, and we understand the needs of our newer players. Here's a little more info on what to expect.

Hope to see you there! Drop a comment if you plan to come so we know how many tables to set up.

As always, feel free to bring drinks & snacks for yourself or to share.

Might be a crazy idea, but if anyone wants, we can pop up a tent out front of the building and toss some tiles while listening to the music.

Comment if you’re interested.

The best way to learn mahjong is to PLAY mahjong. We hope you get to join us tomorrow afternoon 5/31 @ 2pm at the studio for open play and perhaps get a bit of practice and meet some people.

As for me, I play wherever and whenever I can, so I'll be there. Often, while sitting at my booth at the farmers market, I'll set up a table. Sometimes people come by curious about what I'm doing, sometimes a random player joins for Siamese, sometimes I just do solo practice.

If you can't come tomorrow, we hope to see you soon, until then, find a way you can practice whether it's by your self, online, or with other people.

Be blessed y'all!

*edited to add 2pm starting time on June 21*

You spoke, we listened.

Starting this Sunday, we're altering our Open Play hours on the 1st and 5th (if there is one) Sundays of the month to a 2pm start time. Open play is drop-in/drop out, so if you can't make it precisely at 2, that's okay, come when you can!

Open play is open to ALL SKILL levels, new players are encouraged to come practice. We promise, it's not that scary, and there are usually a few that can help with questions or guidance.

In trying to make the space as accessible for play, learning, and community building, we realize the importance for considering others before making changes. So as we're planning our upcoming calendar we would appreciate your input.

Would adding or extending a 2pm start time for some Sundays better your availability to join Open Play events?

This would really only effect the 1st and 5th (if the month has 5) as beginner classes will remain on 2nd and 4th Sundays.

Thank you in advance for your input, we look forward to tossing some tiles with you soon!

Great class yesterday! 14 students and teachers came together to start or continue their mahjong journey! It gives us so much joy to be part of bringing people together to build community.

Thank you to all our participants who spent their rainy Sunday afternoon with us to meet new people and learn.

There was a lot of laughter and questions (we ❤️ questions,) many smiles, a bit of frustration, and a few ducks handed out to those who got Mahjong. We hope everyone had a good time and comes visit us again soon.

Also, a BIG thank you to ACM Project and New Opportunity School for Women for providing snackies for us, twas an unexpected treat!

Our space is located at 204 N Broadway suite 50 (with private parking on Washington Ave) and is open to all ages and skill level. Classes are scheduled for the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month 2p-4/4:30 and open play is EVERY Sunday 5p-?.
