This was such a special gift to make.
I used the Baby Bird quilt pattern by J O Y Martin—> TheMakingsOfJoy but this quilt’s story began more than four years ago. Joy creates wonderful patterns. And the quilting was done by Donya Bannister - her work is always consistent and beautiful. 🫶🏻 (and check out that crinkle!!!)
When I first started sewing these pieces together, they became so much more than fabric. They gave my hands something to do and my heart something to hold onto while my late mother-in-law was walking through her cancer journey.
When she left this earth, I carefully tucked all of these quilt pieces away - not yet ready to finish them. They sat quietly, collecting dust for a few years, until this past year when a dear friend helped pick them back up and start stitching again. With this encouragement, I was able to return to this quilt. He started sewing the HST’s together and I eventually sewed all the blocks together.
This quilt has become a reminder that healing doesn’t happen on a schedule—and that it’s okay to begin again, even after a long pause.
To some, a quilt is simply fabric and thread. To me, it’s a collection of memories, moments, love, and the people who helped shape my life. Every stitch carries a little piece of that story.
As I finished this sweet baby quilt, I couldn’t help but think about how beautiful it is that love can continue to live on in the things we create. Sometimes, the simplest gifts carry the deepest stories.
(And I must say - I’m so excited to see pictures of a precious baby girl on this quilt in the near future!!!)
