Bemidji Speculative Fiction Writers Anthology

Bemidji Speculative Fiction Guild is proud to announce the upcoming anthology, Sword and Quill Vol. I

We aim to showcase the talent and hard work of Bemidji speculative fiction writers. Speculative fiction is a wide genre, and we are looking for short stories that

explore that range, from demon-hunting urban fantasy to bone chilling rural horror to epic hard science fiction and everything in between. We are not looking for stories that include excessive violence, racism, abuse, or political and religious proselytizing. We also will not be accepting any fan fiction. Stories must be between 500 and 7,500 words. Submissions must be formatted in standard manuscript format:

● 12 pt Times New Roman.
● Double spaced lines.
● Indent the first line of each paragraph (use automatic formatting to do this, usually the “tab” key…no spaces).
● Do not add extra lines between paragraphs.
● State your name, contact details, and word count on the top left of the first page only. Payment will be in the form of a free, electronic contributor’s copy of the anthology and a deep author's discount on print copies. Please submit only one story at a time. Any more than this and both stories will be rejected without consideration. You may submit reprints, which we also encourage -- please indicate prior publication history. All stories must be saved as in .doc format and emailed to [email protected] or Roy at [email protected] with your name, the title of the story, and the word count in the subject line. Please also add a short bio that also explains your connection to Bemidji. You may send hard copies to:

Roy's Comics & Games 210 3rd St. NW
Bemidji, MN 56601:

The anthology will be edited by Roy C. Booth, Cynthia Booth, and Sean Froyd. The editors have sole discretion regarding which submissions will be included in the anthology. The editors’ decision is final. Please do not resubmit a rejected submission as it will be rejected without further consideration.

I have been informed that a few years back BEANIE AND THE BAMBOOZLING BOOK MACHINE (Samuel French, published in 1990) surpassed 15,000 copies sold.

This October BEANIE will be celebrating its 35th anniversary, the premiere production taking place at the Chalberg Theater, part of the Central Lakes Community Performing Arts Center. As some of you may know, BEANIE was my first of 58 published stage plays. I think of the original;l cast and crew, the only ones left in the area are myself and my former PHS/BCC classmate Kevin Boyles.

Beanie Boren, a science wiz who is not keen on reading, has designed a book reading machine for the science fair
