Father's Day is this Sunday, June 21st.
My dad was a schoolteacher his whole life. By the time we got his attention at the end of the day, it came in short, concentrated doses, and every single one of them landed.
He didn't sit us down and say, ""Let me teach you something."" He just lived it. He showed us what service looked like by doing it. What integrity looked like by wearing it. What it meant to love your family by never once making us doubt that he did.
He was Papa to every grandchild who came after him. And when I became the first of my siblings to be a grandfather, there was no question what I would be called. His secret lives on through me.
I wrote about him because I didn't want to forget, and because I know I'm not the only one who had a dad like that: a man who never called himself a mentor but helped build everything you are.
If your dad is still here, call him this Sunday. Not a text. A call.
If he's gone, tell someone today what he taught you. That's how it lives on.
Happy Father's Day to every dad who showed up. You built more than you know.
This story, and so much more, lives inside my books. If this post moved you, if it reminded you of your own Papa, I'd love for you to read more. Everything I've written is available at my store, including paperbacks, ebooks, and audiobooks.
