Almaden Lake Park in San Jose is home to the city's fourth all-inclusive playground, a half-acre space built so kids and adults of all abilities can play together.

The main feature is the Berliner Neptun Fort, with a tunnel slide, climbing nets set at multiple heights, so everyone can engage at the level that works for them. Good play involves a little risk. Kids get to try something hard, work through failure, and try again until they succeed and that path from struggle to mastery is where the real confidence comes from.

Surfacing throughout supports mobility devices, and the layout includes a hammock swing for vestibular input, plus interactive musical instruments from Percussion Play for sensory engagement. Open sightlines make it easy to see kids from anywhere in the space, while quiet zones, ADA restrooms, and seating round out the site.

Funded in part through Santa Clara County's All-Inclusive Playground Grant Program, it's a great example of what inclusive can mean beyond ramps and transfer stations, it's built into the play experience itself.

We’re excited to feature Ashland Zócalo in Ashland, CA, recipient of the 2026 Honor Award in General Design from ASLA-NCC!

This vibrant community space was made possible through a collaborative effort between SPEC Play, Berliner, Trust for Public Land, Hayward Area Recreation and Park District (HARD), and WRT Landscape Architects, creating a much-needed park that now serves more than 11,000 residents within a 10-minute walk. Inspired by the community and designed as a welcoming town center, the one-acre park reflects local culture while providing opportunities for gathering, play, and recreation.

SPEC Play proudly partnered with Berliner on the custom tower and rope play structures along with the calisthenics fitness equipment, helping bring this playground to life. Congratulations to everyone involved in this incredible achievement!

Tenderloin Recreation Center has a new playground open for play!

The newly reopened play area at Tenderloin Recreation Center creates new opportunities for children and families to play, explore, and connect in San Francisco. In collaboration with BASE Landscape Architecture, SPEC Play worked with partners Lappset, Duncan & Grove, and Percussion Play to help bring a variety of nature-based play experiences to the project. The revitalized space supports active recreation, exploration, and community connection in the Tenderloin community.

The project was made possible through the collaboration of the San Francisco Recreation & Park Department and its partners, SF Children & Nature, Wu Yee Children’s Services, KABOOM!, and the Low Income Investment Fund (LIIF).

Fuller Park in Napa is open for play! 🍃

At Fuller Park in Napa, CA, SPEC Play collaborated with local artist and designer Daniel Wodarcyk of S2 Associates and the City of Napa to bring to life a one-of-a-kind custom playground from Berliner. Inspired by the form of a fallen leaf, “Leaves on a Line” was envisioned as both a visually striking public sculpture and an immersive play experience for Napa’s “Tree Park.”

Working from Wodarcyk’s original concept, SPEC Play transformed the vision into a fully accessible play space for ages 2–12 featuring climbing, sliding, spinning, swinging, music, and a colorful ground plane, designed as Napa’s first playable public artwork.
