WWU Theatre’s Summer Test Kitchen is in its third year of convening students, faculty, alums, and writers to workshop and test-drive play scripts and screenplays. After week-long intensives, the company will present a series of staged readings of the works in development.

At Western Washington University's 2024 Summer Test Kitchen, Sehome High School students, Director of Learning and Inclusion at the Seattle Children’s Theatre Cessalee Smith-Stovall, WWU Professors of Theatre Evan Mueller and Rich Brown, WWU Theatre alumni Ella Newborn and Ian Frank, joined the WWU Theatre Department to fine-tune “American Prom,” a play about teenagers working to bring their town together. The hard work and commitment the students showed during STK became a full-circle moment when author Idris Goodwin, Smith-Stovall, WWU Professor of Theatre Evan Mueller, and alumni Newborn and Frank performed a staged reading at Sehome High School on May 20 for students of Sehome High School, Blaine High School and donors to the WWU Theatre Department.

Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's darkly comic fairy tale mashup throws a giant, a witch, princesses and princes, Jack, his beanstalk, Jack's beloved cow, Little Red Riding Hood - and of course the Big Bad Wolf - into a crepuscular forest filled with magic, lust, broken promises, and wishes gone wrong.

Come see the Coldharts perform their devised piece, Edgar Allan, on May 2nd at 7:30pm in Old Main Theater.

Also come experience their workshop in the DUG theater from 5-7:00pm. The signup is posted outside the theatre office. Overflow seating is available. Overflow students will be able to watch the workshop, but not participate.
