Today, we hosted a studio masterclass focused on the non-salon side of the craft: content capture. We had an amazing group of stylists in the studio taking their content game to the next level, breaking down the mechanics behind light shaping and intentional posing to make their portfolio reflect their actual talent.

Here is what we dialed in:

𝕃𝕚𝕘𝕙𝕥 𝕊𝕙𝕒𝕡𝕚𝕟𝕘: Shifting your light source to move beyond default ring lights and overhead lighting Carve out real dimension, hair color depth, and texture.

𝒜𝒸𝓉𝒾𝓋𝑒 𝒟𝒾𝓇𝑒𝒸𝓉𝒾𝑜𝓃: Simple body mechanics and weightless hand placement to help clients look and feel comfortable while elevating a pose from passive to editorial.

Tɾҽɳԃʂҽƚƚҽɾ Aɳɠʅҽʂ: Unconventional framing and structural cues (like creating negative space with elbows) that turn a quick phone photo into a high-end editorial shot.

Today I’m missing some really great people.

I don’t really know how to describe the feeling. I’ve lost friends suddenly. I’ve watched family members who were kind of the glue that held everyone together pass away. And lately I’ve been thinking about how as I get older, that list is probably going to keep growing. I really don’t like that thought.

Usually this page is the "full-of-life-fun-loving Mandy the photographer". I am the one making jokes. I get way too excited over some random little detail nobody else cares about. I daydream too often probably talking way too much about the technique of taking a picture.

There’s another reason I picked up a camera in the first place. I wanted to be able to save something I felt in a moment. 15K photos on my 3 year old phone says a lot.

My grandpa had probably 30 film cameras. Six years after he passed, we are STILL finding rolls of film tucked away. Every once in a while another one turns up, and there’s something really cool about holding a little piece of time that someone captured years ago. The one I found yesterday is on its way to get developed!

He had no idea where that roll would end up. He probably didn't even think about someone finding it 36 years later.

A photograph isnt just proof that someone was there. Sometimes it's the closest thing we have to holding onto how something felt.

A person. A place. A season of life. Even just some completely normal Tuesday that nobody realized would someday be something we wished we could remember.

So I guess today I'm just missing people.

And maybe I'm sharing this because, lying beneath all the fun and pretty pictures, that's really what I'm trying to do with this little business of mine.

Remember | Preserve

Hold onto something before it becomes something we wish we could go back to.

And maybe, every once in a while, let the people who follow along here see a little bit of the person behind the camera, too.

When you look at a photo, what makes you stop scrolling?

For me, it's texture. If I can almost 𝕗𝕖𝕖𝕝 the image, I'm hooked.

So here's a little weekend challenge...If you walked outside right now, what are five interesting textures you'd photograph? Think peeling paint, old brick, tree bark, water, feathers, rust, weathered wood, anything.
