The "dog days of summer" generally mean the hottest, most sultry, and inactive days of the summer season. In order to help you cheer up and shake off your seasonal funk, we are presenting one of our most popular groups. Anyone who has seen the Skylark Brothers previous shows, will probably be back. So come experience what most of the region already knows…… This is one of the top bands in the St. Louis area. Musicianship, song selection, showmanship… Check check check. I haven’t reminded anyone recently of our double your money back guarantee, but it’s still in effect! And as Brooke Dubman says… We do it because you like nice things!

Sorry for the late advertisement today folks, but I got distracted, mowing the lawn and brush hogging. It’s easy to get lost in the circular repetitions. The immediate gratification looking back at the freshly mown grass is very pleasant. I am sure there is some poetic analogy between cutting grass and playing music, but will spare you all those ruminations this week. Mr. Barnett and his band are about as good as it gets up here at the TNP. Something different every time and always fun. As Andy describes below, we added some dining artistry as well. Tip Belz is providing a variety of barbecue. Looking forward to this. Come on up and say hi.

Yep… It’s been a little while since the BelleVagrants have had a show. But it’s about that time. Next Saturday, August 29 we will be playing at the Stagger Inn in Edwardsville Illinois from 6 PM to 9 PM. If you have never been there it’s a fantastic place to see Music and have a nice dinner. They have great food at reasonable prices. Saxophonist Jeff Pinkel will be in the vagrant lineup and Super Sound Man Jeff Fields will be turning the k***s to make us sound even better.

We hope everyone had a restful week off. We missed you and almost didn’t know what to do with ourselves last Thursday night. Other than major holidays, that was the first week without a TNP for a long, long, long time. Beth and Emma are going to bring us back this Thursday with an epic female-driven extravaganza. They visited us last February and put on a memorable show full of soulful singing, thoughtful lyrics, and Rockin riffs. So we will get the benefit of several months where they have refined this unique combination. If your life does not feel complete without the ukuleles, music, conversation, and welcoming atmosphere, The Abbey is the place to get it back. See you Thursday.

Relax everyone, please don’t panic. We will see you again a week from Thursday.

As I was reading Andy‘s poster below, I realized that the Thursday night Philharmonic rarely hosts bands that feature country music. Of course, country is a very broad category. Some music historians might argue that all of what we know of as rock and roll was spawned by a mixture of blues and country. Maybe you will hear both of those. Every once in a while, it’s nice to hear examples of music in its purest, stripped down form. Lyrics full of longing, heartache and joy sung along with music that magnifies the human condition. The Colonel Ford Band are masters at matching meaningful words with potent music to make you feel something. So come on out Thursday night and let’s all feel it together. If you have some cool boots, and a snap button Western shirt with fancy designs on the shoulders, wear them.

Did you know that conversation and singing likely have more in common than they do differences. For example, they rely on shared rhythm, emotional tone, and active listening. Our voices - the instrument, turn sound into an exchange of feelings not just data. If you attend The Abbey on a regular basis, you will know that folks in the crowd are singing to each other in enthusiastic ways. We understand that the community part of The Abbey is as important as the entertainment feature. So keep singing to each other (at a courteous volume, of course). This week we have a very fine band called the Xceptions who will communicate to you from their hearts. It will sound just like a melody. Feel free to make it your own. Bring a pizza.
