🪨✨ LAKE SUPERIOR AGATE ✨🪨

This weeks Wildcard Wednesday stone has survived ancient volcanoes, glaciers, and more than a BILLION years of geological chaos just to end up on our cabbing machine. 😈

🌊 So what makes it special?

Lake Superior Agates formed over a BILLION years ago when mineral-rich groundwater moved through gas pockets in ancient volcanic rock. Over time, layers of silica and iron-rich minerals built up inside those pockets, creating the gorgeous banding these agates are known for.

That iron is also responsible for many of their signature deep reds, oranges, browns, yellows, and rusty tones. ❤️🧡🤎

Then the glaciers came through and did us a favor 😏 — breaking the agates free from their host rock and carrying them across the Lake Superior region. That’s why they can be found today throughout parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, and around the Lake Superior shoreline.

🔎 What to look for:
✨ Tight, colorful banding
✨ Fortification and eye patterns
✨ Rich iron-stained reds & oranges
✨ Occasionally wild tubes, mossy patterns, and other funky formations
✨ And EVERY piece is completely unique

Lake Superior Agate is also Minnesota’s official state gemstone, and good examples—especially those with bold colors and tight, dramatic banding—are seriously sought after by collectors.

And because it’s Wildcard Wednesday, you already know the drill... 👀
