Fable Records

Fable Records Record label in Austin, TX Fable Records is one of the oldest independent record labels in Texas. We proudly celebrate 45 years in 2020!

Fable is a family with a story that chronicles the Spirit of Austin music back to when its synergy was just beginning to cast it's spell over the world. In 1973 and into 1979 Mike Mordecai and a small team of enthusiastic young music innovators put out a series of vinyl 45's - local Austin groups like Zeus, Rick Sheffield and Zilker Sunday – Mike’s rock/jazz fusion band with saxman, John Mills. I

n 1975 they made a bold move to put out three albums in a month with three hot local bands: Steam Heat, 47 Times Its own Weight and Starcrost – Mills and Mordecai’s new project. Fable Records manufactured 1000 copies of each. It was at this point Mike decided to make it all official. This Trilogy, hailed by Billboard Magazine as the turning point for contemporary jazz in Austin, put Fable Records and Austin’s Jazz/rock/funk scene on the national radar. Today the trilogy continues to be a coveted find by vinyl collectors across the globe. Fable Records continues to offer authentically Austin bred Jazz, Rock and Funk.

Beto made music for cruising the coast in a Fairlane.

We are joined by Mike Mordecai as we talk about the band he helped start 50 years ago, Beto and The Fairlanes. Their album Eye of The Hurricane is back in stores on vinyl right now!

Where did the title come from? Did the hotel really have a scenic view? Did someone Willie just give them the studio? Did they have a hit?

Questions not answered!
Who is Popacito? Do you have to have the top down when listening to the album? Why was Tony yelling at the Zopilote?

A big thank you to End of an Ear Records for letting us shoot this interview there.

Thank you to Camille at Ishgirl Creative for helping us shoot this!

And a big thank you to all of those supporting your local artists, record stores, and record labels!

John has never been one to mill about.

We sat down with our artist John Mills to talk about his new album(The Years Roll By), his 50 years with Fable Records, and the origin of his Times Ten band.

How did John get connected with Fable? Where did the Times Ten name come from? What is John’s favorite song on the album? Yes we made him choose!

Questions not answered!
How many saxophones does John own? Which Sax is best? What if the whisper cared? Does Sherlock Holmes know who played Sax on Baker Street?

A huge thank you to for letting us interview John in the middle of their store on a busy day!

Thank you to Camille at for helping us shoot this!

And a big thank you to all of those supporting your local artists, record stores, and record labels!

What started with Steam became Extreme!

We sit down with Mike and Bruce to talk about their new album, Fifty, what 50 years as a band looks like, and answer the hard question,
“What would James Brown do?”

Questions not answered in this video.
His name is Bruce but why is he mad about it? Why would James Brown do? Who really let the dogs out?

A massive thank you to Waterloo Records for letting us come to their amazing new store and interview the band. When you get a chance go visit and while you’re there get a copy of Extreme Heat’s “Fifty” at Waterloo today!

Another big thank you to Camille at Ishgirlcreative for help us shoot this interview.

More interviews to come!

It all began at the demise of Michael Mordecai’s first band.

Where did our name come from? When did Fable actually start and why? How did a random email from Japan get us to start releasing music again? Why is this video exactly 7 minutes long?

Questions not answered in the video!
Do we Willie have a connection to Willie Nelson? What really happened July 25th 1993? What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow? What is the difference between a fable and a myth?

Welcome to Fable Records! We are very so glad you’re here. Please head to our site and enjoy our music.

Oh and the 7 minute thing? Mickey Mantle was Michaels’s favorite baseball player.
