Feeling hesitant about dance competitions? It’s norma! While they can seem intimidating at first, they’re also one of the fastest ways to level up your ballroom dancing.

Competitions give you a clear goal, which accelerates progress far beyond the usual relaxed learning pace. Yes, they bring pressure, but that pressure drives sharper technique, faster improvement, and stronger performance skills.

Along the way, dancers often see a real boost in confidence, improved social dancing through better fundamentals, and even cognitive benefits that support long-term brain health. Most importantly, you grow in a way that’s hard to replicate in social lessons alone.
The energy, the preparation, and watching others push their limits can turn hesitation into motivation! 🏆

No Partner? No Problem!
One of the biggest myths about ballroom dance is that you have to bring someone with you. The truth? Most people start in their own! In fact, starting without a partner can be a huge advantage.

It allows you to focus on your technique, build confidence, and develop strong habits without the distraction of trying to coordinate with someone else. When the basics become second nature, partnering feels much more natural and enjoyable.

So if you've been waiting until you find the "right" dance partner, consider this your sign to stop waiting. Start learning, start moving, and start building your foundation. The partner work will come—and you'll be ready for it when it does🕺

So the studio where you take lessons invited a Ballroom Dance Coach. Should you take advantage of their presence and sign up for a lesson with them? The short answer is yes!

Coaches have a lot of expertise to offer both new and seasoned students, no matter the level. Providing personalized feedback, broadening your Ballroom vocabulary, and creating unique choreography are just some of the wonderful services delivered to you by the coach during your lesson.

On June 2nd, we had the absolute pleasure of hosting Polina Pilipenchuk here in New York Ballroom Dance Center. Her expertise brings a rare level of technical knowledge that can elevate every dancer’s foundation, movement, and performance quality.

Taking additional lessons with an accomplished coach like Polina is one of the best ways to strengthen your technique while reinforcing the work you do with your teacher. Learning from both your coach and your teacher together creates a powerful team approach that helps dancers grow faster, train smarter, and gain new perspective on their dancing 💃

If you ever wanted to dive into the world of dance, but were not sure where to begin, and what the difference between all of these dances even is, you’re in luck! Today we will be looking at the similarities and differences between American style ballroom and International style ballroom. So take your pencils out, because class is in session!

Let’s break down the types of dances within each category. American Style consists of Smooth (Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz), and Rhythm (Bolero, Rumba, Cha-Cha, East and West Coast Swing, Mambo, Samba, Merengue); International Style consists of Standard (Waltz, Foxtrot, Tango, Viennese Waltz, Quickstep), and Latin (Cha-Cha, Samba, Rumba, Paso-Doble, Jive). Now hold on just a minute, you might be thinking, there is a lot of overlap between the two, and you would be absolutely correct! While there are the same dances in each category, the way you express them is different. A great analogy for this would be speaking the same language, but with different accents!

The notable difference between the two styles is movement and hold. International Ballroom (Standard) emphasizes precision and posture while requiring dancers to maintain a continuous closed hold. American Ballroom (Smooth) allows for more freedom in movement, utilizing open positions and dramatic lines, making the dance more expressive. Finally, American Rhythm dances feature an emphasis on hip action, while International Latin leans on sharp leg movements and staccato actions.

I know this was a lot of information, but our goal is to educate, and make Ballroom Dance just a little less intimidating!

It's time to do some myth busting: “I cannot dance because I have no sense of rhythm.”

The world of ballroom may seem intimidating to newcomers. One of the most common reasons why people are hesitant to start dancing is the idea that they have no sense of rhythm; they are convinced that no matter how many times they've tried, they just cannot get in with the beat. And of course, how can you start dancing without having any kind of rhythm? After all, the people that dance all have impeccable rhythm, it must be innate, no way “I” can learn that. Well, we're here to tell you that you, in fact, CAN learn rhythm, and that it's not as daunting of a task as it may seem.

While it's true that some people have an innate sense of rhythm, it's also true that such a sense can be learned. The secret is counting. Take your favorite song, and listen to a couple of times, paying attention to the instruments. Now start clapping along to it. While you're clapping, say the numbers out loud (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4- and so on). You’ll be able to hear immediately if you’re off beat. If you happen to go off beat, don’t worry! A little practice will go a long way. The key is getting as much exposure to music as possible. By doing this for just a few minutes every day, you’ll become a rhythm pro in no time!

Hopefully these tips and tricks made you a little more comfortable, and confident enough to finally get out onto the dance floor! 💃

Congratulations to Stephen, Ida, Ellie, Elena, Elizabeth, Irene, Laurie, Amity, Don, and Marian, ho participated in our annual examinations! Your discipline, dedication, and hard work showed on th ance floor, and we couldn't be more proud of your progress! 💪

On April 30th, we had the absolute pleasure of hosting Andrew Phillips, a renowned coach and accomplished competitor in both smooth and rhythm styles, who served as our strict but fair proctor. 🫡

His expertise, encouragement, and insight created an atmosphere that was both educational, and fun. We are incredibly fortunate to learn under his guidance. 💃

Taking exams in ballroom dance is about so much more than evaluation. It builds confidence, reinforce echnique, and sets clear goals for growth. It challenges dancers to refine their skills while celebratin how far they've come.
Well done to everyone who stepped out of their comfort zone and rose to the occasion! 🏅

Home is where the Cha-Cha is 💃

As our students prepare for their examinations, it's important to remember that taking some time to relax and have fun. Studies show that taking breaks while learning leads to material retention. And what's better than simply taking a breather? Going to a Practice Party, of course! 🤩

Practice Parties are designed specifically to help you practice what you learned in a stress-free environment, surrounded by your peers.

So don't miss out and join us on the next one! 🪩

One thing's for sure, our open house events have King Julian's stamp of approval 👑✅

We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us and helped make the night so special! The atmosphere throughout the event was warm, welcoming, and full of connection. It wasn’t just about learning steps—it was about building a community. That’s also why we always encourage attending mixers. They’re a fantastic way to meet new people, practice your skills, and truly feel part of something bigger.

We can’t wait to see you all on the dance floor again soon! 🪩🕺💃

You know it's time for our annual open house event when the teacher starts singing "jingle bells" in April 😂🌸

We had an incredible time hosting our open house event at New York Ballroom Dance Center on April 10th!
One of the highlights of the evening was our enormous group class. Seeing so many people learning together, supporting each other, and having fun on the dance floor is exactly why we love what we do. Even with such a large group, our instructors made everything feel simple and accessible—proving that ballroom dance can be easy and enjoyable for anyone, regardless of experience! 💃
