A scar from history, still carried through living flesh.

In 2007, researchers made a discovery that felt almost impossible to believe. A bowhead whale was found still carrying a harpoon embedded in its body—an iron weapon traced back to the 1800s, from the brutal age of commercial whaling.

The harpoon had remained lodged for more than a century, silently traveling with the whale through freezing oceans and changing generations.

It revealed not just extraordinary longevity, but an almost unimaginable resilience—proof that this whale survived a human attack and kept living for over a hundred years afterward.

Jonathan is the world’s oldest known living land animal, a giant tortoise estimated to be around 192 years old. Born in the early 1830s, Jonathan has lived through the Industrial Revolution, two World Wars, and the rise of the modern world, all while remaining on the remote island of Saint Helena, where he resides today. Despite his age, he continues to eat, rest in the sun, and move slowly through his enclosure, cared for by veterinarians and conservationists. Though he has lost his sense of smell and most of his eyesight, Jonathan’s long life stands as a remarkable example of longevity in the animal kingdom and a living link to nearly two centuries of history.

Well it’s hurting me but I have to cancel the Jam for this month. Several of our band members are ill and it looks a lot like covid. So we’ll put off our after-summer comeback til next month. I am looking forward to a great winter season at the Legion though. Our house band, Not Done Yet, is awesome and we all welcome you to come out to sing and jam with us.

If you haven’t heard elsewhere, I am closing down the Jam for the summer, since a lot of folks have vacation plans and kids activities to attend to. So, no Jam on July 3, and we’ll be back in action on the first Sunday in October. Have a wonderful July 4 holiday and a wonderful and safe summer!
