Probably one of the most common questions I get. Unfortunately, the answer isn’t just “after X weeks. Before switching a piercing to a hoop, I want to know it's actually ready for one, not just that it looks good on the outside.
A piercing can stop hurting, stop swelling, and look completely normal while the tissue inside is still healing. Changing to a hoop too early can introduce extra movement and pressure to that healing channel, potentially causing irritation, bumps, swelling, or setting your healing progress back.
Before switching to a hoop I am looking at:
✨ If the piercing has had adequate time to heal for that specific placement
✨ Swelling and tenderness have resolved
✨ There’s no ongoing irritation, discharge, or persistent crusting
✨ The piercing channel is stable
✨ The jewelry change makes sense for your anatomy and placement
And remember: different piercings have different healing timelines, and healing looks different for everyone! If you want a closer estimate of the healing timeline for your piercing, check out my website in the comments! I have tons of great info on there.
When the time DOES come, we’ll also make sure your hoop has the right diameter, gauge, material, and style for your piercing. I promise I’m not trying to keep you from your dream jewelry. The goal is to get your piercing healed well enough that you can actually enjoy that hoop without immediately making your piercing angry.
