Jenny Morgan (b. 1982 Salt Lake City, UT) is a painter living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Her diaphanous paintings are rooted in precise, hyper-realistic figures which ebb in and out of focus, merging into landscape or diffusing gently into a painterly fog. There is a razor’s edge quality in the calm precision of Morgan’s deliberate brush stroke, which can be quick and expressive as well as invisible and precise. Beyond the objectivity of corporeal features, Morgan engages with the auras of her subjects while also expanding on the aliveness of the inert—both landscape and drapery. In doing so, she delves into philosophical questions surrounding the human condition. Her work recalls numerous art historical references, from Venetian reclining nudes to playful rococo paintings to 20th century surrealist landscapes, all while imbuing a hypnotic, euphoric, and hyper-present setting.

Bhakti Baxter (b. 1979 Miami, FL) lives and works in Topanga, CA. Exploring the relationship between science and spirituality, his work hinges heavily on geometry, the systemic manifestations of mathematical principles in nature, and the interpretive freedom of abstraction. Working in a variety of media within sculpture, painting, and drawing, Baxter’s practice is an ongoing investigation into existential queries through the creative process.

Baxter’s work has been exhibited at Nina Johnson Gallery (Miami, FL), Perez Art Museum (Miami, FL), BravinLee Programs (New York, NY), Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin (Paris, France), and Manifesta 11 (Zurich, Switzerland), among others.

I AM THE PASSENGER
an intergenerational group exhibition of non-objective painting, in two parts—

We relate to non-objective painting in both corporeal and immaterial ways. Non-objective painting wants to stir something. Non-objective painting connects with our bodies. Severe yet playful, non-objective painting is evidence of the artist operating within a greater movement of creation. We bear witness to the journey of artist as passenger when we stand in view of non-objective painting. Non-objective painting is about feeling and perceiving in the body, it’s personal, it’s universal.
