HERE. IS. BETTER. comes to the Playhouse for an evening spotlighting resilience, healing, and the realities of PTSD.

This powerful and hopeful documentary follows four veterans—each with different backgrounds and service experiences—as they undergo evidence-based trauma therapies. Their stories include former presidential candidate Jason Kander, a Vietnam Veteran confronting decades-old memories, and women Veterans whose experiences are too often overlooked.

With unprecedented access to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the film offers a rare look at both struggle and progress within America’s mental health crisis.

A panel discussion led by Shane Killoran of Hit House Film will follow the screening.

About Sunday. 🎬 1 film, 2 screenings, 3 marvelous guests. 🙏💫🥂There are words I can assign to Sunday’s program- impactful, important, urgent, layered, intense, humorous, serious, necessary. All those words are true. But the word that keeps coming back- human. 🥹 ‘s stunning film is yes, exquisitely filmed, narratively sublime, & so informative. To me, it’s gloriously human. And though different, beautifully different, both discussions anchored us all in our humanity, our interconnectedness, & despite the illusion of appearance…our similarities. ♥️ Agency, freedom, autonomy, safety, community, love, joy, grace, & acceptance for who we are, free from apology or judgement…it’s what most all of us want, deserve, & need. 🤩 We sat together in that human space laughing, asking, sharing, listening, & supporting. 😌 Thank you Tami, , & for making the trip to ! Your insight, candor, humor, & grace was/is deeply appreciated. 💫 You made the screenings sing w life & your openness was not only helpful but truly inspiring. 🙌 Thank you to both audiences! Your presence, warmth, & questions made the day! 🥳😁🙏 & Stanza Books, thank you for partnering & joining this journey w us- your perfect book curation & fabulous questions added such poignant depth to the program! Let’s play again soon! ☺️🤗⭐️ & - you know this, I & the house would be lost w/out you. 🥹 🏡 - I mean, I’m just singing all of the praises. 🥂As ever, such a joy to program in your glorious space. 😍 More soon, please! 💥 If you haven’t: See. “The oldest profession.” Think about that…what it means, what it implies, what it says about any culture going back to dawn of currency & transaction. 😐 Rather than sit in judgement over the individuals who provide a service, why not do what we can to keep that space safe for those who choose to work in this industry? Why reinforce stigma, judgement, & brutality rather than help to keep safe? 🤔 Why, given that it is the oldest profession, is it still so unsafe & unsupported? Could it be that globally forced or trafficked s*x work generates $236 billion in revenue? 💰The questions are as profound as the humanity that dictates the decision(s) behind the choice to enter the profession. Join us Sunday at 3pm or 5:30 for screenings of the new documentary . 🎞️📽️💡A talkback will immediately follow each screening, co-moderated by me & , co-owner of , featuring the filmmaker Tami Gold & former s*x worker, now advocate & author Molly Simmons. ✨
A curated selection of books will be available for purchase onsite. 📚💫
Slide 1- Christopher: In high school, I was getting beaten up and jumped and called a fa**ot. It was terrifying. That wears on you and you hold it inside of you, but holding everything in was making me suicidal. And I was just like, I can’t take this anymore. So yeah, I saw s*x work as a ticket out of there, as that life raft and I grabbed onto it. S*x work is the reason why I’m here, the reason why I’m alive and the reason why I have a stable life.
Slide 2- Cathy: I left Mexico for many reasons, one of them was that my family did not accept me as a trans girl. I was arrested and beaten by the police and that’s why I migrated to the US because it was so abusive. I came with the illusion that my life would change, but society didn’t allow it. Doors were closed to me so what I could do was s*x work. 🍎

Ever since I was a kid, this time of year always inspired the desire to watch classic movies. 🍿 Not necessarily holiday-themed viewing either. In fact, unless I was going to the movies with friends as I became a teenager, it’s all I watched through New Years. 🎄I’d switch on & bake or wrap presents or curl up on the sofa or get cozy in bed…. 🤓🎞️✨It’s this impulse that I wait for & it usually begins lurking about Halloween &, these last years, continues into late February. ❄️❄️ Glorious, gorgeous, masterful…they are proving more riveting now than they ever were. 🤩 The skill, the creative articulation that could not rely on computers or CGI, only innovative imagination & skill. ✨ Whether it be sets, lighting, wardrobe, camera, script, or performance- the deft meticulous care that went into every frame is spectacular. A fantastic reason to put the phone down & revisit, & get lost in the swirl of the beauty. ☺️ Tonight, as snow approaches, it’s a kind of double-feature picture show. ♥️ I can’t recommend these visitations to another time, another kind of focus enough. 💫💫

“Yes, I killed him. I killed him for money. And for a woman. I didn’t get the money and I didn’t get the woman. Pretty, isn’t it?”
-Double Indemnity

"The poor dope—he always wanted a pool. Well, in the end, he got himself a pool, only the price turned out to be a little high."
