Teatro Yerbabruja Launches NEA Big Read with Community Celebration in Bay Shore
The kickoff event will explore freedom, justice, home, and belonging through Sandra Cisneros’ The House on Mango Street and other cultural expressions relating to the 250the year since the signing of our Declaration of Independence.

Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja invites the community to the kickoff celebration of its months-long NEA Big Read program on Saturday, September 19, 2026, beginning 6:00 p.m. at its Second Avenue Firehouse Gallery & Arts Center, located at 17 Second Avenue in Bay Shore, New York.

The kickoff event will introduce Sandra Cisneros’ celebrated book, The House on Mango Street, and launch a 10-month-long series of community programs featuring literature, visual art, theater, music and dance performances, storytelling, and public conversations.

Through the experiences portrayed in Cisneros' book and other featured programming, participants will explore important questions about home, identity, immigration, freedom, and belonging. The program will also create a welcoming space for immigrant communities to discuss what freedom and justice mean in their lives, and the extent to which the nation’s promises of liberty, equality, and the pursuit of happiness have been fully accessible to everyone.

“As an immigrant community, we carry our homes, memories, languages, and cultures with us,” said Margarita Espada, Founder and Executive-Artistic Director of Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja. “This program invites us to reflect on what freedom and justice mean for our families and to imagine a country where every person has the right to belong, to be heard, and to build a future.”

The kickoff celebration will feature:

Free copies of The House on Mango Street.
Community readings and performances.
The opening of The Home That We Carry art exhibit.
A community conversation about freedom, justice, immigration, and belonging.
Information about Teatro Yerbabruja's and its partners' upcoming NEA Big Read programs.

🇲🇦❤️ What an unforgettable journey!

As we close our Moroccan Art Exhibition, we reflect on a weekend filled with art, culture, meaningful conversations, and new friendships.

It was a true honor to welcome international curator Khira Jalil and share the extraordinary talent of contemporary Moroccan artists with our Long Island community. Together, we celebrated the power of art to connect people across cultures and borders.

To everyone who visited the gallery, supported the exhibition, shared their time, and celebrated this cultural exchange with us—thank you. Your presence made this experience truly special.

At Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja, we remain committed to creating spaces where art inspires dialogue, builds community, and brings the world closer together.

Until our next exhibition… thank you for being part of this beautiful experience. ❤️🎨
