The Lincoln Theater, originally built in 1950, is undergoing significant reconstruction to restore the Baton Rouge monument to its original state. The first phase includes readying the property for a full renovation and making it environmentally safe. The second phase would restore the theater and the third phase would expand the theater to include the Louisiana Black History Hall of Fame. The Lin
coln is set to re-open in June of 2014. The two story brick veneer-over-concrete building is located at the corner of Myrtle Walk and Eddie Robinson Sr. The theater showcased feature films and hosted numerous live performances by big name entertainers. The monument was the planning site for the United Defense League which developed strategies for the 1953 Bus Boycott. This unique theater also housed various local small businesses including a barbershop, dentist office, pharmacy, newspaper, insurance company, and an attorney’s office. The Lincoln closed for services in the mid-1980s, reopened in the 2000s and closed again in the later months of 2007.
