Marian Croak is behind the tech that enables us to talk on FaceTime, Zoom, and other apps that connect friends, family and others around the globe.

Marian Croak from the Great Class of 1977 holds the patent for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), which helps us make calls over the internet instead of a phone line.

Marian Croak has spent her life inventing. After graduating from and earning her Ph.D. from , she worked at Bell Labs-Nokia in New Jersey, creating technologies “in service of humanity.” She went on to work for AT&T and is now vice president of engineering at Google.

In 2022, Marian, owner of 200+ U.S. patents, was one of the first two Black women to be inducted to the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Among her inventions is the text-to-donate function that her team helped create in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which has helped to raise millions of dollars since its inception in 2005.

Croak also leads the Research Center for Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology at Google, which “ensures that Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning positively impacts users and the world, particularly marginalized communities."

Growth ((G)R(O)W FORTH)

I want to say thank you to everyone in my tribe and in my community, first and foremost. I haven’t spoken extensively about my 2020 and 2021, but much like for everyone else these have been trying times.

2021 has been difficult in and of itself because of an uncomfortable reminder that always comes with living in Baton Rouge again—people I know, for reasons of state violence, aging, and just regular life situations, are dying. One thing that I realize is a distinct hallmark of “second-class citizenship” and oppressed classes is that dying is normal. Passing on is a natural and normal part of the life and energy cycle, and I meet it with no judgement or begrudging attitude, however I cannot deny Death’s ability to always interrupt whatever I have going on and making me reevaluate it’s presumed Nemesis—Life.

In the past few months I’ve looked over what my life has been, what it has become, and what I want it to be for the future and I found everything I was looking for—I found the rhythm of life. Growth, an integral part of that syncopation, is usually an uncomfortable process that involves the possibility of losing something or someone significant, something or someone important, or something or someone you feel like you can’t do without. And you have to have enough faith and hope and love to let it go. That’s the jazz improvisation of existence, it is the rhythm of life.

And so I’ve been letting go and holding on to what anchors me in all that I do—my passion for creation, my music, my love for people, and my will to believe. What we believe we become, and what we become ripples into eternity.

So don’t just go move forward in your life. Don’t be afraid and just keep running because you’re scared to stop. Take a pause, re-evaluate your Soil (Soul), add some fertilizer (Healing), and Grow Forth (Shine with the Beauty of Life).

When will we be fully prepared to believe in our ability to create for ourselves, so that we can stop believing in people who silently orchestrate our destruction?
