My latest installation of Surface Tension is at the Coos Art Museum.

I began with sand from the nearest beach, laid down alongside pieces of tooled copper, aged to a blue patina with local seawater.

I added my signature Baltic amber, along with symbols drawn from a Baltic myth also shaped by a western sea: that when the sun sets, the sun mother can carry our sorrows into the water, cleansing them so we can awaken renewed.

Each time I make her, she is different; shaped by the place she’s in, holding the spirit of the waters around her.

At the end of the exhibition, the sand will be swept away. She will disappear, arriving and leaving like the tide.

I hold her for a moment,
then let the tide take her back.

i believe survivors.
part of the grief of surviving is realizing that justice does not arrive on its own.
that karma does not come.
that truth does not naturally rise to the surface.
it can be buried.
you can be buried.
i asked myself where god is in all of this.
there was no answer.
but I began to understand that god is in the act of witnessing.
in being seen, and in seeing each other.
in the hands that hold us safely when the world does not.
truth is not something that simply emerges.
justice is not something that inevitably happens.
we build them.
we build them by telling the truth.
by holding each other.
by choosing to live what was denied to us.
it is not the natural order of things.
but it is in our nature to order it.

I keep returning to the myth of Jūratė because for me, her story articulates one of life’s deepest mysteries: why do we suffer? Why in life’s palate is joy always outlined by the spectre of grief? And if that’s the case, when we are mired in grief - how do we find the spectre of joy, the pinhole with that thread of light that shows us the way back to the surface?
For those of you who have asked why I always wear amber, this is why 🤗

This piece was made with ceramic clay, epoxy clay, acrylic paint, watercolor paint, black sand, and of course, amber.
