Before the first catch, there’s a journey through the morning haze.

Finished this little 5x7 original watercolor, Out Through the Channel.

A shrimp boat making its way through the quiet waterways of Southeast Texas, heading toward open water and another day’s work.

I wanted to capture that moment when the morning mist still hangs over the trees, the channel stretches ahead, and the day is just beginning.

There’s something about these working boats and the people who make their living on the water that feels worth preserving.

Some mornings, the humidity tells more of the story than the landscape.

Starting a new watercolor featuring a shrimp boat tucked along the waterways of Southeast Texas.

This first layer is all about atmosphere—soft edges, muted colors, and letting the trees disappear into the morning mist.

There’s still a lot of painting ahead. The boat needs its details, the shoreline needs depth, and the darkest values are yet to come.

But for now, I’m trying to capture that quiet moment before the day begins.

There’s something about nighttime that changes an ordinary place.

A familiar house, a single glowing window, a moon breaking through heavy clouds—suddenly the everyday feels a little mysterious.

I painted this piece thinking about that quiet moment when the world settles down and even familiar places seem different.

It feels especially fitting to share it for Creations of Nighttime, Saturday, October 10th.

And I love seeing this one framed. It reminds me that I’m not just painting a house or a landscape—I’m trying to paint a feeling someone might want to live with.
