Part 2! Alvin Ailey and Sister Rosetta Tharpe!

Alvin Ailey founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater in 1958, creating a space for Black dancers and choreographers to showcase their talents. His most famous work, Revelations, is a celebration of African American culture and spirituality. Ailey’s contributions revolutionized modern dance, making it more inclusive and reflective of Black heritage.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe, known as “the Godmother of Rock and Roll” and “the original soul sister”, was an American musical innovator credited with the invention of rock music. Her song “Rock Me”, recorded in 1938, is the first instance of “rock” being used to describe the musical genre she pioneered, defined by the combination of the soulful singing of gospel, the compositional themes of Rhythm and Blues, and new techniques for the electric guitar, including the earliest implementation of heavy distortion that would come to define the instrument. Her 1944 single “Strange Things Happening Every Day” was the first gospel record to “cross over” into Billboard’s “race records” chart, now known as the Billboard R&B chart still in use today. As a black, female, LGBT artist in an art form defined by masculinity, she was shunned by many conservative and religious groups for her blend of gospel forms and worldly themes, as well as her willingness to perform in nightclubs outside of the typical venues that were considered “appropriate”. Her 1952 “Have A Little Talk With Jesus” is the first-ever in*******al duet in the US. She invented the famous “Chuck Berry Duck Walk”, and Chuck Berry credits his entire career as being “one long Sister Rosetta Tharpe impersonation”. Sister Tharpe died in October 1973.

Today we would like to celebrate and shine light onto Lorraine Hansberry, Nichelle Nichols, Alvin Ailey, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe!

(Ailey & Tharpe part 2)

Lorraine Hansberry was the first Black woman to have a play produced on Broadway A Raisin in the Sun (1959), which depicted the life of a Black family in America. Her work addressed themes of racial identity, feminism, and civil rights. Hansberry’s influence went beyond the stage, as she was an activist and writer, using her platform to challenge injustice.

Nichelle Nichols was an American actress, singer, and dancer, most famous for her role as Nyota Uhura in Star Trek. As a singer, she toured with Duke Ellington in the 50s and 60s. In 1965, she took the role of Uhura, the USS Enterprise’s chief communications officer, and became one of the first black women in history to be featured in a major television series. Intending to leave the show after one season, Nichols was convinced to stay on the show by Star Trek superfan Martin Luther King Jr personally, who considered Nichols “a vital role model” for the ongoing civil rights movement, noting that “For the first time on television, we will be seen as we should be seen every day—as intelligent, quality, beautiful people who can sing, dance, and go to space”. In her role as Uhura, Nichols would be often cited as having portrayed the first ever televised in*******al kiss with show lead William Shatner, a groundbreaking step forward for black representation in media. During and after her time on Star Trek, Nichols volunteered for NASA to help recruit many of the first black and female scientists and engineers, including famed astronauts Sally Ride and Mae Jemison. After her death in 2022, her ashes were sent into deep space alongside Star Trek’s Majel Barrett and Douglas Trumbull.

✨Black History Month Celebration✨

As Black History Month comes to a close we want to take some for the next week to shed light on a few Black Artists that have made history or are currently making history in the Arts!

Many of these artists made history through breaking barriers and redefining Black representation in their fields. Each of them have not only excelled in their craft but also challenged the industry/art world to be more inclusive and reflective of diverse experiences.
