𝐌𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐀 𝐀𝐃𝐕𝐈𝐒𝐎𝐑𝐘
Due to the extreme heat, NPPD is anticipating some high energy use over the weekend, and similar to this past weekend, there could be a need to implement some service interruptions on Sunday and Monday, in the north-central Nebraska area. This would occur if the need for electricity becomes greater than what the transmission system is capable of delivering in that area.

The areas around Brown, Keya Paha, Rock, Holt and Boyd counties are mostly served by wholesale customers of NPPD, but NPPD does serve the following communities in this area at the retail level: Ainsworth, Anouka, Atkinson, Bassett, Butte, Bristow, Emmet, Inman, Long Pine, Lynch, and O’Neill.

As noted previously, this is not an issue related to generation. There is enough generation available to serve the load. But there could reach a point where the current transmission system in this area cannot move enough electricity to serve what the customers are using. If that occurs, utilities in this area could implement service interruptions in order to lower the amount of electricity being used, to a level the transmission system can handle. These service interruptions could be conducted by NPPD or the other Public Power providers in the area.

We were able to avoid interruptions to service this past weekend, and we appreciate efforts by customers who opted to voluntarily conserve energy during the days of peak heat.

Completing construction of two transmission projects, the R-Project and the Ainsworth Wind-Bassett project, will alleviate these system issues.

Customers can voluntarily conserve energy in this area over the weekend. Ways to do this could include:
▪️Setting your thermostat 2-3 degrees higher, but keep your system fan running.
▪️Turn off and unplug non-essential lights and electronics.
▪️Avoid using large appliances, like ovens and washing machines.
▪️Keep curtains closed on the east, south, and west sides of the house during the day.
▪️Reset the fridge temperature to 35-38 degrees and the freezer to 0-5 degrees.
▪️Lower your electric water heater temperature to 120 degrees.
