Deftones, Incubus, and Adam Sandler got together to play Be Quiet and Drive by Deftones to promote the MTV movie special 'Little Nicky' from 2000. Still can't believe this is a real thing! Such a random collaboration which I find hilarious but cool as hell.

Animal by Pearl Jam (MTV Music Awards 1993)

The actual meaning for "Animal" has usually been confused by fans with some thinking it's about the band's hatred towards the media and others thinking it's about gang r**e. In an interview with Melody Maker in 1993, vocalist Eddie Vedder stated:

"I don't wanna talk about who the anger is directed at. It's not so much personal, it's just, some person at the record company said the other day that they wanted the vocals turned up. He wanted people to understand exactly what I was singing. So I told him what it was about and he said, You're right. Let's leave the vocals as they are. Maybe we don't really want people to understand it."

Originally, Vs. was titled Five Against One, which was taken from the lyric "One, two, three, four, five against one ..." from "Animal". Concerning the original album title, Gossard said:

"For me, that title represented a lot of struggles that you go through trying to make a record...Your own independence—your own soul—versus everybody else's. In this band, and I think in rock in general the art of compromise is almost as important as the art of individual expression. You might have five great artists in the band, but if they can't compromise and work together, you don't have a great band. It might mean something completely different to Eddie. But when I heard that lyric, it made a lot of sense to me."

Wonderwall by Oasis (Aspen, Colorado MTV 1995)

On this day, Oasis released their second studio album (What's the Stroy) Morning Glory? on October 2, 1995.

The general consensus is that this song is about Noel Gallagher's then-girlfriend Meg Mathews, who is compared with a schoolboy's wall to which posters of footballers and pop stars are attached. He told Select magazine at the time: "It's about my girlfriend. She was out of work, and that, a bit down on her luck, so it's just saying, 'Cheer up and f---in get on with it.'" Noel later married then divorced Meg Mathews.

However, according to Q magazine's 1001 Best Songs Ever, this was not about Mathews. Noel is quoted as saying, "The meaning of that song was taken away from me by the media who jumped on it. And how do you tell your Mrs. it's not about her once she's read it is? It's about an imaginary friend who's going to come and save you from yourself."

When I'm Gone by 3 Doors Down (Jay Leno 2002)

Happy Birthday to Brad Arnold from 3 Doors Down. He would have been 47 today. Rest in peace Brad.

"When I'm Gone" does not necessarily mean "when I'm gone in a permanent sense." When Brad Arnold wrote this song, the subject he had in mind was unconditional love, for when you're removed from your loved one by miles, or time, or other obstacles. "It's asking a question, just please love me when I'm gone," says the lead singer. "And not just like when I'm dead and gone, but when I'm gonna come back. And that's kind of one thing it's about. But at the same time it's kind of about unconditional love. It's a lot of different statements it's asking of the person in that song. And it's like just the fulfillment of those different needs for every situation that it mentions. So I guess that song is just about needing someone really to be there for you unconditionally, and when you're gone."

The Ataris are an American punk rock band from Anderson, Indiana. Formed in 1996, they released five studio albums between 1997 and 2007. Their best-selling album is their major label debut album So Long, Astoria (2003), which was certified gold. Their high-charting single is their cover of Don Henley's "The Boys of Summer" from So Long, Astoria. The only constant member throughout their history has been singer/songwriter/guitarist Kristopher "Kris" Roe.

The staff of Consequence ranked the band at number 37 on their list of "The 100 Best Pop Punk Bands" in 2019. In 2025, Terry Bezer of Screen Rant stated the opinion that the band was underrated, referring to "In This Diary" as "one of the best pop-punk songs ever written."

Hit or Miss by New Found Glory (Conan O'Brien 2001)

New Found Glory founding guitarist Chad Gilbert has sadly passed away on September 20, 2026 at the age of 45. Rest in peace Chad Gilbert.

Steve Klein (guitar) told Kerrang! magazine February 16, 2008: "It's one of the first songs that we ever wrote that was in the direction that we ended up going." Chad Gilbert (guitar) added: "I remember Cyrus (Bolooki, drums) coming to me and playing me the guitar riff. We took that riff and it became a really important song. That was the song that really won kids over. We played it so much that it got a reaction from fans everywhere we played, without it even being on the radio."

Lovefool by The Cardigans (Conan O'Brien 1997)

Lead singer Nina Persson penned the lyrics for this song, while guitarist Peter Svensson wrote the music. Persson was sitting in an airport waiting for a plane when she was inspired to write the song and thought it would have a "slow bossa nova feel." She told STIM (The Swedish Performing Rights Society): "I do find that the biggest hits are the ones that are the easiest to write."

Svensson recalled writing the music for this song in an interview with The Independent: "To me, that song is still that moment when I wrote it in a small room, sitting on my bed in our home town. It was supposed to be some kind of a bossa nova: a totally different song, slow and mellow and sad. The production on it, though, and the disco drums made it all shinier."

On this day, Tool released their second studio album Ænima on September 17, 1996.

The first track on Tool’s 1996 album Ænima. The theme of this song is about how people will take things to the extreme for pleasure by using “fisting” as a metaphor.

Because of this, radio and TV stations were not allowed to say the title of the track on the air. They would instead call it “Track Number 1.” One MTV VJ at the time, Matt Pinfield, the station’s metalhead, would sometimes send a signal to the fans by waving his fist in front of his nose when introducing the song.
