Why do people get so frustrated with taxes?

Because paying taxes is one thing. Feeling like you have no say in where that money goes is another.

Most Americans work hard, see federal taxes come out of every paycheck, and then watch huge amounts of government spending get debated while everyday costs keep climbing.

The argument should not simply be about paying taxes or not paying taxes.

It should be about what taxpayers are actually getting in return, how efficiently that money is spent, and whether the system feels fair.

Nobody wants to work harder just to feel like their paycheck is funding a system they have no confidence in.

A contract job paying $58,000 a year should not feel like applying to become an astronaut.

Master’s degree.

Five years of experience.

Portfolio.

Three references.

Four interviews.

An unpaid project.

And somehow a personality test at the end.

The wild part is that companies can demand all of this for a job that comes with no long term security.

At some point, the hiring process became harder than the actual job.

College move in day is supposed to be the moment parents finally hand over the keys and let their kid figure things out.

Somehow it turned into a full interior design project.

Parents are bringing matching bedding, wall decorations, storage systems, and enough supplies to make a dorm room look like a staged apartment.

I get wanting to help. But part of growing up is making your own space, making your own choices, and figuring out what you actually need.

Drop off the boxes, give them a hug, and let them take it from there.

Then go sit in the car and have your emotional breakdown privately.

By 35, your biggest financial goal should not just be making more money.

You should also know what happens to everything you own if something happens to you tomorrow.

A will or trust, properly titled assets, updated beneficiaries, a successor trustee, and medical and financial powers of attorney can prevent your family from having to figure everything out during a crisis.

And one detail people often miss: beneficiary designations can override what your will says, so they need to be reviewed after major life changes.

Estate planning is not just for wealthy people.

It is about making sure your family is not left with a financial scavenger hunt when you are gone.

A worker asking for enough money to cover rent and groceries gets blamed for inflation.

Meanwhile, companies can raise prices, protect margins, and report record profits, and somehow that part gets much less attention.

Wages are an easy target because the person asking for a raise is standing right in front of you.

The bigger picture is more complicated. Prices can be affected by wages, supply costs, demand, competition, productivity, and corporate pricing decisions.

Blaming workers for wanting a livable paycheck is a pretty convenient way to avoid asking who actually has the power to set the price.

You earn money and taxes come out before you even get to spend it.

Then you spend that money and taxes can show up again at the register.

Buy a house with money you already earned and paid taxes on, and you can still owe property taxes every year just to keep owning it.

That is the part that feels strange.

The same dollar can pass through your life several times, and somehow there is always another tax attached to it.

You work for the money once.

The tax system gets several opportunities to meet it.

A $100,000 salary does not automatically mean the IRS taxes every dollar of that $100,000.

Certain deductions and pretax contributions can reduce the income that is actually subject to federal income tax.

That is where accounts like a traditional 401(k), traditional IRA, and HSA can become powerful. You are not making money disappear. You are changing how much of it is taxable now.

But there is an important catch: contribution limits, eligibility rules, and the standard deduction vary by year and individual situation.

The bigger lesson is simple.

Making more money is great.

Understanding how the tax code treats that money can be just as valuable.

A paid off car does not look impressive sitting in a parking lot.

There is no luxury badge, no giant monthly payment, and nobody knows how much money you are keeping every month.

But having a reliable car with no payment means your paycheck has one less bill attached to it.

You can drive something five or ten years old and still be in a stronger financial position than someone financing a brand new SUV.

The real flex is not what your car costs.

It is what you no longer owe.

A $100,000 car gets attention because everyone can see it sitting in the driveway.

Put that same $100,000 into an income producing asset, and suddenly people start asking whether you are taking too much risk.

That says a lot about what we are trained to celebrate.

A car loses value while you drive it. An investment has the potential to grow and produce income over time.

Looking wealthy and building wealth are two completely different games.

Sometimes the quietest purchase is the one that changes your financial future.

Equal and fair are not always the same thing.

If one adult child owns a home, earns a strong income, and is financially secure while the other is struggling with $80,000 in debt and barely getting by, splitting an inheritance 50/50 may feel simple, but it does not necessarily feel fair.

Then again, parents are not only leaving money behind. They are leaving relationships behind too.

Giving one child 80% could create resentment that lasts for years, even if the intention was to help.

There may not be a perfect answer.

Sometimes the hardest part of inheritance planning is deciding whether fairness means giving your children the same thing or giving each of them what they need.
