The admiration and total awe I have for is matched only by the horror I felt in seeing the state of her hands after she returned home from a training week in FL.

This is a team of total Amazons. Wonder women all. The future looks so much brighter when I take a moment to consider the individual and collective power they wield.

These DDS kids bring me such joy. A sampling of highlights from the full range of ages I work with:

SLIDE 1 👩🏽‍🎨 6th graders started their sepia toned self-portraits in acrylic today. SLIDE 2🦁 Hand sewn felt stuffie by this beaming 2nd grader whose concept for creating a lion took some persistence SLIDE 3 🧬 this first grader first planned to make a candy cane as we worked to learn clay modeling basics. Then, he started to make the form of a gun. When I asked him to avoid making a gun, he said “Okay then I think I’ll make a double helix.” 🤯 SLIDE 4 🛝This 4th graders concept for his dream room included a slide into a ball pit. He created the complex curving form of the slide with small pieces of foam core. Creating 3D curves from straight lines is lesson in mathematics and imagination all rolled up in one. This is a deeply engaging project for most. I had a student email me requesting 500 more classes to keep working on their designs🥹

Face Jamming this week with 3-5th grade - getting students geared up to playfully engage with depicting personality and emotions, keeping it playful and energetic, cooperative and irreverent. And as always, steering well clear of the paralysis of perfectionism that sets in so quickly with this age!

I don’t recommend getting this year’s flu variety. I was bedridden for four days.

On the fifth day, I returned to discover this healthy smoothie on my desk.

I DO recommend daily doses of loving, creative children. Any day.

Grateful for what I do

Halloween work in the Art Nest includes working with this amazing Cinderella pumpkin in different ways. Last week we stuck modeling clay on its surface. This week the invitation was to hammer nails into her skin.

What should we do next?

The simplest prompts are often best when it comes to unlocking creative risk taking.

For Saturday’s Art Nest I presented modeling clay, two ways: table 1 (geared to the 2-5 yo set) offered a branch + a rainbow of non-hardening modeling clay. At table 2 I provided a flat wooden surface + clay (geared towards 6+).

At the end of they day we had colorful leaves and berries, monkey branches, mini forests, teeny tiny fruit baskets, checker boards, twisted floral scenes, snakes and slippery dips.
