WINTER 2023 FEATURED ARTIST: Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Pause as you pass by our window gallery at 16 State St to peek at some of Lautrec's iconic lithograph prints!

Born in 1864 to French aristocrats, Lautrec was afflicted with a condition that causes brittle bones and other deformities and spent much of his life in poor health. A childhood injury left Lautrec bed-ridden for months, during which time he took private lessons and entertained himself reading, drawing and painting. He would spend the rest of his life creating works of art.

Despite having a wealthy upbringing, Lautrec immersed himself in Paris nightlife and lived a poor working-class existence amongst the marginalized of society. Lautrec is known for his rapid line drawings and jottings from quick visual impressions, and ultimately became one of the best graphic artists of the 19th century. His work of seductive dance and patrons of Moulin Rouge (the birthplace of cabaret) made him famous almost overnight. He began presenting major private exhibitions, and painted advertisements, portraits of famous actors and aristocrats, and served as an art judge before slipping away to alcoholism, depression and anxiety.

Lautrec passed at the young age of 36, but was a prolific creator, leaving thousands of drawings and hundreds of paintings and lithographs behind.
