On Thursday, August 27 we'll find out which one of these talented local artist will take home the $30,000 art prize. This fellowshi aims to assist in furthering the career of a visual artist or visual artist collaborators living and working in the greater Baltimore region. COMING SOON: Divine Inspiration: The Legacy of the St. Francis Missal

In August 2026, to commemorate the 800th anniversary of St. Francis of Assisi’s death, the Walters Art Museum will once again showcase The St. Francis Missal, a legendary 12th-century manuscript that is believed to be a relic of touch of St. Francis.

According to early accounts, in the year 1208 St. Francis and two of his followers were debating what God’s plan for them might be. Unable to decide, they sought answers at the church of San Nicolò in Assisi. Francis opened the book on the altar three times at random. In every case, the text on the page urged renouncing earthly goods. This pivotal moment laid the foundation for the Franciscan order. The manuscript in the Walters collection, known today as the St. Francis Missal, is traditionally believed to be the very book consulted by St. Francis of Assisi and his companions.

After you see Christopher Nolan's larger-than-life take on The Odyssey in theaters, stretch your legs in our Ancient World galleries to see some much smaller works that relate parts of the epic tale that inspired ancient authors like Homer and Virgil 💍

🏹 Carved into orange beryl, an entire scene from the Trojan War plays out on this small ring. Apollo appears on this intaglio in the process of stopping Achilles from pursuing the Trojans into the city of Troy. Achilles (right) is armed and looking away while holding a shield in his right hand and a sword in his left. Apollo (center) holds a bow in his right hand. An armored warrior (left) with only his leg and shield visible is going through an archway into Troy.

🐖 This ring made of chalcedony depicts Circe's half-man, half-pig creations. The kantharos—a cup made for drinking wine—balancing on the man's knees likely contains the potion responsible for his unfortunate transformation.

💪🏽 The scene on this intaglio is more difficult to make out than the other two examples, but it contains just as much story. Here, we see Aeneas escaping Troy with his father, Anchises, and son, Ascanius. He carries his father on his right shoulder and leads his son with his left hand.

What a treat to have our friends from Baltimore Center Stage at the museum this week! Bocking playright Preston Crowder, intimacy coordinator Kaja Dunn, cast member Marchánt Davis, and company director Maya Camille were treated to a tour of Douriean Fletcher: Jewelry of the Afrofuture by the show's curator, Christine Sciacca.

In medieval Europe, books of hours provided an opportunity for intimate, daily interaction with art in service of the user’s Christian faith. Images in these books employed innovative visual strategies to engage the imagination of the user through immediate, immersive experiences. Medieval Mindscapes looks closely at these artistic strategies through 20 works from the Walters renowned collection of rare books and manuscripts.

This afternoon, visit the museum to hear directly from the Sondheim Art Prize finalists—Thea Canlas, Leigh Davis, Brandon Donahue-Shipp, Curran Hatleberg, and Danni O’Brien—during their artist talks. Bbefore you take a seat in our auditorium, visit the Janet & Walter Sondheim Art Prize Finalists Exhibition to see their work for yourself.

For the first time in exhibition's history, the finalists work is on view in Hackerman House at One West Mount Vernon Place at the Walters. Need help finding this gallery? Ask any museum staff member and they'll show you the way!
