For 92 years, the Walters Art Museum's Conservation Lab—the third-oldest such lab in the country—has been a place where knowledgeable conservators and conservation scientists care for a wide range of artworks. They combine expert knowledge of materials and methods with scientific analysis to learn more about the people who created the artwork in their care.

On any given day, this team will prepare artworks for exhibition and loan, assess new acquisitions, study materials and techniques, and seek to prevent future deterioration.

Today, on our fifth annual Day of Giving, we're asking our community to back this essential work and support the restoration of three beautiful 18th-century Sèvres porcelain vases. These delicate objects are beautifully decorated, boast royal connections, and are in need of pressing repair and preservation work.

That's a wide stance, my guy. Super duper solid 🦁

Solid, indeed! These figurines are made of bronze and from the Geometric period. The abstract way these works were rendered is common of this period in Greek art and, in spite of their relatively simple forms and small scale, considerable technical skill was required to create them.

These figurines would have likely served as a votive offering at a Greek sanctuary. The creation of these types of objects most often occurred at the sanctuaries themselves, where devotees and worshippers could purchase them and place them on view. In the case of the bull figurine on the third slide 👉🏾 , many other similar bulls have been found at Olympia. Bulls were status symbols in Geometric Greece and indicated strength and virility.

New this fall: Sunday Screenings at the Walters Art Museum 📽️ 🎬

Each month, we are opening up our auditorium so that you can watch a film for free on the big screen. Our first screening is this Sunday, September 20 at 1 p.m. and we're kicking things off with O Brother, Where Art Thou?

Now that you have had the chance to see Christopher Nolan’s adaptation of The Odyssey, one of the oldest surviving pieces of literature, witness a comedic take on the epic with this film by brother director duo Joel and Ethan Coen. This Oscar-nominated dark comedy adapts the classic story in the setting of the American South during the great depression and stars George Clooney, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson.
