More than a celebration, the Cherry Hill Arts & Music Waterfront Festival is a platform for truth-telling—an affirmation that heritage is not only something to remember, but something to invest in, protect, and pass on. As we gather along Baltimore’s Middle Branch waterfront during the convergence of the United States’ 250th anniversary, the 100th anniversary of the movement that gave rise to Black History Month, the 80th anniversary of Cherry Hill Homes, and a decade of this Festival, we are reminded that the future belongs to communities bold enough to tell their own stories. Through arts, culture, and meaningful dialogue, we transform public space into living history and reclaim storytelling as economic power, civic presence, and collective memory.

Cherry Hill History and Cinema Combine for Special Celebration in South Baltimore

On Sunday, June 28, 2026, the Youth Resiliency Institute (YRI) will host a special Celebration at scenic Middle Branch Park in South Baltimore, MD. (This new event date has been rescheduled from a previous date). This day-long event will feature a museum-style exhibition in the Boathouse of Middle Branch Park curated by the Youth Resiliency Institute, honoring the self-determination of Cherry Hill’s pioneering Black families. Additionally, attendees can enjoy an outdoor waterfront screening of the award-winning film “Sr” directed and written by former Cherry Hill Homes public housing resident Toroes Thomas.

The Youth Resiliency Institute’s 2026 Juneteenth365 Celebration coincides with two significant historical milestones: the 80th anniversary of the dedication of Cherry Hill Homes and the 100th anniversary of the movement that led to the establishment of Black History Month. This event underscores a broader commitment to preserving community memory while fostering new opportunities for cultural engagement and intergenerational dialogue, particularly at a time when Black history and public memory face increasing challenges and erasure nationwide.

Throughout the event, there will be children's activities, live music, and food trucks, all contributing to a welcoming and family-friendly atmosphere along South Baltimore’s waterfront.

REMEMBRANCE! 1976 SOWETO UPRISING

On June 16, 1976, young people in South Africa mobilized a powerful protest against the apartheid regime's education policies. The Soweto Uprising became an epic fight that contributed to the end of apartheid.

Youth Resiliency Institute youth cultural arts organizers study youth movements throughout history to delve into the tactics, strategies, and impacts that have evolved over time and across various contexts. *Special thanks to artist Januwa Moja for allowing YRI youth cultural arts organizers to employ her Soweto 1976 commemorative art as a discussion prompt.

Did you know that Youth Resiliency Institute events, gatherings, and community activations do more than create equitable access and strengthen family engagement—they also plant seeds for the future?

Thank you to U.S. Ice Skating Championship medalist Ting Cui for partnering with the Youth Resiliency Institute during our 3rd Annual Free Pop-Up Ice Skating Activation. Because of this incredible partnership, young ladies from Cherry Hill and the wider south Baltimore community not only experienced the joy of skating during last February’s Pop-Up event but also received their own pair of ice skates and the opportunity to continue with free ice skating lessons into the summer.

This is what collective work and responsibility & community investment looks like—creating experiences that become opportunities and moments that grow into lifelong possibilities.
