After nineteen amazing years here at the Zoo, we’re getting ready to say farewell to Felix. 🐘💚

Felix has been a beloved member of the elephant herd and a favorite among both guests and staff. She’s also the mother of Samson, who was born here in 2008. While we’ll miss seeing her here, Felix is heading to an accredited facility where she’ll have the opportunity to live alongside other female elephants—a move that’s in her best long-term interest.

As part of this transition, the Zoo will become home to an all-male herd of African elephants, helping support elephant breeding programs in other accredited facilities.

Felix will leave later next week, so there’s still time to stop by the elephant habitat, spend some time with Felix, and wish her well on her next chapter.

Hoppy ! This year, we have some incredible news to celebrate: Panamanian golden frogs are back outdoors for the first time in more than 20 years.

Critically endangered and extinct in the wild, these iconic frogs have been raised in secure facilities for decades as conservationists work to protect them from a deadly fungal disease. Now, frogs at our partner conservation center, EVACC Foundation, are taking a carefully monitored step into outdoor enclosures.

By studying how captive-bred frogs respond to natural conditions, we're helping collect vital data that will be important for the next step in this effort. Later this year, we'll bring frogs from Maryland to Panama, building on this work with the ultimate goal: returning Panamanian golden frogs to the wild. ✨🐸
