Since 1980 Baltimore Clayworks has grown to include 12 resident artists and 20 or so associate artists. We've been blessed to have 23 to 26 trustees at any given time and 15 full time, part time, and contractual staff members. We engage more than 25 instructors, 20 interns and work-study students, dozens of volunteers and hundreds of donors, all of whom make Clayworks a unique, vibrant and communi

ty-centered institution. Our exhibitions showcase the best of international, national and local ceramic artists working in ceramic sculpture, pottery, installation and conceptual ceramics. Today, our educational programs which began with 40 dedicated individuals, teach the discipline of ceramics to more than 1200 students on our Mt. Washington campus, and through our nationally acclaimed satellite programs, reach 500 children and senior adults in Baltimore’s most challenged neighborhoods. Clayworks' educational program is led by artists who are both locally treasured and retain high national profile in the field of ceramics.

Our biggest annual celebration of ceramic arts returns October 17 for an evening of firing demonstrations, hands-on activities, live music, food, drinks, community, and surprises. Watch artists work with some of ceramics’ most dramatic firing processes, including Raku, Obvara, and Noborigama. Try your hand at clay stamping with Blue, participate in or cheer on the Clay Olympics, dance to live music, and experience the glow of the kilns after dark.

Best of all? Fire Fest is FREE and open to the public for the first time! Registration is required. Space is limited!

The next phase of The Gathering Ground mosaic seating project is underway! The bench is being carved and its steel armature welded this week, with concrete fabrication beginning next week. In September, the bench will be installed and the community will have opportunities to help bring the mosaic to life.

Want to get involved? Join Us every Wednesday! Come to Empact Art .life on Wednesday from 4:00 - 8:00 pm to lend a hand, make art, and be part of this collaborative public artwork. No prior experience is necessary—just bring your creativity and enthusiasm!

The mosaic bench installation is a Gutierrez Memorial Fund Legacy Project. Additional support was provided by the Chesapeake Bay Trust, Blue Water Baltimore, the Mount Washington Improvement Association and Nature Sacred.

Call for Entry: “Baltimore Clayworks Clay Biennial” juried by Ching Yuan Chang .chang . “Baltimore Clayworks Clay Biennial” is a national juried exhibition presented in conjunction with the 61st Conference of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), that celebrates the vitality, diversity, and evolving language of contemporary ceramics. Open to ceramic artists working in all styles, techniques, and conceptual approaches, the exhibition seeks work that reflects both technical excellence and compelling artistic vision. Functional, sculptural, installation-based, and experimental works are all welcome.

Join us next week on August 26, from 4:30 – 6:00 pm for a casual community gathering celebrating the opening of work by Wei-Yin Chen , the 2026 Tainan National University of the Arts (TNNUA) Artist Exchange artist from Taiwan. Stop by to meet the artist, explore the exhibition, connect with fellow clay enthusiasts, and enjoy an afternoon of art and conversation.

This exhibition depicts living things at their most beautiful moments, just as they are about to fade away. It was inspired by the anxieties and grief surrounding time and death within my family. Throughout the process, my focus gradually shifted from death itself toward imagining the anticipation of an impending loss, and extended to moments when spirits return in different forms, carrying blessings with them.

The sudden heavy rains that occurred during my residency gradually became a connecting element throughout the works. Within scenes where reality and fantasy coexist, I use excessive water, the decay of food and plants, and the pests of summer to explore the separation and reunion of closely connected beings through a humorous lens.

Join us on Saturday, September 19, 2026, 4:00 – 6:00 pm, for the opening reception of “Shino Odyssey”, a juried exhibition exploring the expressive range and enduring allure of Shino glazes. Featuring ceramic artists from across the field, this exhibition celebrates experimentation, tradition, and innovation; inviting viewers to experience how a single glaze family can yield endless possibilities. Alongside “Shino Odyssey”, “Shared Offerings,” a Solo Exhibition by Ali Saunders, will be on view in our Solo Gallery. The Community Arts Fall Showcase will be presented in our Community Arts Gallery, and our annual shows, “New Kids On The Block” and “Oktoberfest”, will also be on view.

Visit Katherine Pon-Cooper’s solo exhibition, “On My Best Behavior” now through Auguist 29. This exhibition documents an individual reflection on the experience of being a biracial Chinese American and a personal rejection of the “model minority” myth. Through a mixture of Chinese and American ceramic aesthetic languages and firing techniques, “On My Best Behavior” manifests Chinese American artifacts, and encourages expression outside the limits of the Model.

“My favorite part of being a potter is that my work gets to live alongside people in their day-to-day. It’s very intimate and special to be a regular part of someone’s life, no matter how subtle. My other favorite part of this career is how warm and generous the clay community is.
