Our friends at Spooky Solomons created this awesome Maryland Ghost Tour Trail map, showcasing locally owned ghost tours in Maryland! This is a great resource to use to plan out your Halloween season if you love ghost tours!
Several months ago, I asked a local artist to create a Maryland Ghost Tour Trail, highlighting historical ghost tours across the state. I’ve added it to the Spooky Solomons website, complete with clickable images that make it easy to find each tour.
I went on my first ghost tour as a kid. Looking back, I sometimes wonder if experiences like that helped spark my love of history. Ghost tours should be a fun family tradition that, at least in my case, creates a wonderful fall memory.
In honor of the Maryland Ghost Tour Trail, here are my Top 10 Reasons to Take a Historical Ghost Tour:
1. History is better after dark. Old buildings and historic streets just feel different in the moonlight.
2. You might actually see a ghost. Probably not. But wouldn't it be great if you did? Some say they have!
3. You’ll learn something. Murder, scandal, tragedy, strange deaths, history was never as boring as your textbook made it seem.
4. What better time of year to go than October? Ghost tours can be an all year thing, but seem fitting during spooky season.
5. Ghost stories belong where they happened. Hearing a story while standing in the very place connected to it makes it just a little creepier.
6. You get to decide what you believe. History, folklore, eyewitness accounts, unexplained experiences, hear the stories and make up your own mind.
7. It's an excuse to explore somewhere new. Pick a Maryland town, learn aspects of it you never knew, and meet its dead residents.
8. Walking burns calories. This is important because Halloween candy also exists.
9. Maryland has some wonderfully weird stories. Haunted lighthouses, phantom soldiers, witches, restless sailors, mysterious footsteps. We have centuries of material!
10. Getting a little scared is fun. Most aren't THAT scary, but people often say, "That story gave me chills."
