Música Mineira – A Weekend of Afro-Brazilian Culture in Baltimore
Join the Capoeira Social Project for Música Mineira, a unique three-day cultural experience celebrating the traditions of Minas Gerais, Brazil. We are honored to welcome two distinguished guest instructors from Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais: Mestrando Magrão of Oficina da Capoeira and Mestre Amarelo of the Terreru Collective.

Throughout the weekend, participants will explore the rich musical traditions that are at the heart of capoeira and Afro-Brazilian culture. On Friday, July 17, Mestrando Magrão will lead an engaging workshop on traditional capoeira singing and song construction, while Mestre Amarelo will introduce participants to the vibrant rhythms of coco percussion.

On Saturday, July 18, experience a truly rare opportunity as Mestre Amarelo teaches the traditional craft of building a berimbau from raw materials, using authentic biriba wood from Brazil. Participants will learn the complete process—from preparing the wood to assembling the instrument—and will leave with a fully functional, handmade berimbau they created themselves.

The weekend concludes on Sunday, July 19, with a community Roda de Rua in Patterson Park, where musicians, capoeiristas, families, and friends are invited to celebrate together through music, movement, and community.

Whether you are an experienced capoeirista, musician, educator, or simply curious about Brazilian culture, Música Mineira offers an unforgettable opportunity to learn directly from master practitioners preserving and sharing generations of Afro-Brazilian tradition.

Space is limited for the workshops, especially the berimbau-building class due to materials, so register early to reserve your spot! https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/musica-mineiro-in-baltimore

3-Day Intensive Capoeira Pedagogy Workshop

September 5–7 | Baltimore, Maryland

Join us in Baltimore for a rare and powerful professional development opportunity: a 3-day intensive pedagogy workshop led by Mestre Ferradura, marking his first-ever teaching engagement on the U.S. East Coast.

This immersive weekend draws directly from Mestre Ferradura’s work with the Brazilian Institute of Capoeira Education, a federally recognized higher learning institution in Brazil, and is designed for educators, capoeira instructors, teaching artists, and community leaders seeking to deepen their instructional practice.

Participants will explore a holistic approach to teaching that integrates movement, music, history, and contemporary educational strategies. The workshop emphasizes intentional pedagogy and practical application, with a strong focus on lesson planning and age-appropriate teaching methods for children, adolescents, and adults.

Through hands-on sessions, guided discussions, and collaborative planning, attendees will gain tools to:

Structure effective and engaging capoeira-based lessons

Integrate cultural and historical context into instruction

Adapt teaching strategies across age groups and learning styles

Strengthen classroom management, sequencing, and assessment practices

Connect traditional capoeira knowledge with modern educational frameworks

This weekend intensive is ideal for those committed to teaching capoeira—and culture—with purpose, clarity, and impact. Whether you work in schools, community programs, academies, or cultural institutions, this workshop offers a rare chance to learn directly from an internationally respected mestre and educator.

Schedule:

Friday Sept 4: Welcoming Roda
Saturday Sept 5: 10am - 6pm
Sunday Sept 6: 10am - 6pm
NOTE: Saturday & Sunday lunch (w vegetarian options) will be provided

After nearly 20 years of training, teaching, and sharing Capoeira with the city of Baltimore, we are proud to announce that Capoeira Social Project is building a home of our own in East Baltimore.

The space isn’t huge, but it’s ours—a place where our community can grow, train, learn, and continue carrying forward the culture, discipline, and social impact that Capoeira has brought to so many lives.

We’re currently renovating and still have some important work ahead of us, including flooring, electrical, and plumbing. Every contribution, big or small, helps bring us one step closer to opening our doors.

If you’d like to support this dream and help us create a lasting space for our community, donations are greatly appreciated. https://www.paypal.com/donate/?campaign_id=C2RQKXQGEE6DS

Thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout this journey. We can’t wait to welcome you into our new home.

From Brazil to Baltimore and beyond, the rhythm continues.

We had the honor of learning the art of making caxixis from Prof. Camaleã (ES) and Mestre Gato Preto (Guyane Française) during our time studying in Brazil. What was shared with us, we now pass forward.

These moments capture students from our NAF afterschool program alongside Baltimore City Public Schools youth, all learning not just how to make an instrument—but how to carry culture, history, and rhythm in their hands.

From Baltimore, MD to Floyd, VA and Ft. Myers, FL, this knowledge continues to travel, connect, and grow.
