In 2023, I was deeply humbled to receive CLLCTIVLY’s Change Maker of the Year Award. It wasn’t just an award—it carried the spirit of Sawubona, a Zulu greeting meaning, “I see you.” To be seen by my own community in that way remains one of the most meaningful moments of my life. That same year, The Living Well was entrusted with $50,000 in unrestricted funding—an extraordinary vote of confidence in our vision and our work.

The following year, The Baltimore Sun named me one of its Black Marylanders to Watch, an honor that reflected not just my journey, but the collective brilliance of the communities I have the privilege to serve.

This year, I had the profound honor of joining CLLCTIVLY’s Drs. Elmer and Joanne Martin Social Impact Fellowship. Through the Center for Social Impact Studies and an Afri-Orientation experience, we explored ancestral memory, liberatory practice, and Black futures. We also had the privilege of learning from the groundbreaking scholarship of Dr. Ruha Benjamin, whose work continues to challenge us to imagine and build more just and humane systems.

These recognitions are not milestones to celebrate alone—they are reminders of a responsibility to keep showing up.

I remain committed to the work of Black social uplift: creating spaces for healing, entrepreneurship, cultural sustainability, literacy, and community-driven innovation through The Living Well, Black Canni, the Living Library, and our growing network of partners.

This Black August, I invite you to invest in this body of work.

Black Canni: A Declaration of Purpose

I did not enter cannabis for profit. I entered because our communities deserve truth, healing, opportunity, and justice.

Black Canni was created to reclaim the conversation around cannabis by centering culture, history, science, and community. As we prepare for our third conference convening, I am reminded that this work is bigger than an event. It is a movement rooted in education, advocacy, and economic empowerment.

I have stood on Capitol Hill advocating for the rescheduling of cannabis because policies should reflect both science and justice. As a Maryland State Director with Minorities for Medical Ma*****na (M4MM), I remain committed to ensuring Black communities have access to accurate information about both the benefits and the risks of cannabis.

Through Black Canni, I have convened a Brain Trust of physicians, researchers, legacy operators, entrepreneurs, cultivators, healers, policymakers, educators, and advocates who help our community navigate this evolving industry with integrity and accountability. We believe education is liberation, and informed communities make empowered choices.

This Black August, we are proud to partner with DACO’s Black Cannabis Week and CLLCTIVGIVE to invest in the next generation of cannabis entrepreneurs.

Together, we are raising funds to support Pull Up & Pitch, providing aspiring entrepreneurs with resources, visibility, mentorship, and monetary awards to help transform bold ideas into thriving businesses.

If you believe in health equity, economic justice, cultural preservation, and creating pathways for Black ownership in the cannabis industry, I invite you to stand with us.
