In the current “All Blues” issue of Hand Papermaking magazine, Valentin Bakardjiev (Valentin Bakardjiev) contributes a sample of his indigo plant paper, made from post-fermentation plant residues, then dyed with the pigment extracted from the same plant.

In an accompanying article, he outlines his process, which he describes as a “closed-loop sustainability model where the paper itself is born from the indigo plant.” Pictured here are fresh indigo leaves, sheets of finished indigo plant paper, and the extracted pigment. Courtesy of the artist.

“The semiotics of shadows is what we make of them,” says Alejandra Arias Sevilla, and for her Borderings series, they reside in the blue-gray tones. In the current “All Blues” issue of Hand Papermaking magazine, Arias Sevilla tells us about her hauntingly beautiful work that depict the shadows cast by wrought-iron structures and takes us through the process of how she made them at Dieu Donné during her time there as a Marabeth Cohen Tyler Print/Paper Fellow.

Resharing some words from today!

“What stories does the land hold?

Curated by Tess Lukey (Aquinnah Wampanoag), Associate Curator of Native American Art at the Trustees, The Land Tells Our Stories brings together three New England artists (May Babcock, Ella Mahoney, and Posey Moulton) in a powerful multi-site exhibition across the state. The Land Tells Our Stories explores memory, belonging, and the deep connections forged between people and places.

Through immersive outdoor installations at Castle Hill on the Crane Estate, Moose Hill Farm, and Rock House Reservation, The Land Tells Our Stories invites you to see familiar landscapes in new ways. A companion gallery at Fruitlands Museum offers a behind-the-scenes look at the artists’ creative process and storytelling practices.

The Land Tells Our Stories is commissioned by Art and The Landscape, an initiative of The Trustees. Art and The Landscape commissions are site-specific, designed to help tell the story of treasured places of The Trustees and tie together threads of art, nature, community, and history.

On view now through October 31!”

In the current issue of Hand Papermaking magazine, Tim Barrett gives us his take on Aimee Lee’s new book, As Good as Our Tools, which celebrates eighteen artisans who make the tools, “so the rest of us could make paper.” In the book Lee cautions the field that we are fast losing our pioneer papermaking toolmakers, and sadly, we are mourning the recent passing of Howard Clark, pictured here, in his shop in 1983.
