I always keep an eye out for photo opportunities to consider for paintings. Fortunately, many of the paintings I have made are from photos taken on or near our home in Baltimore County. I planted these bee balm flowers in early spring, and by late summer, they were attracting lots of bees, so I took several photos. I've been teaching art for 30 years, and it's hard to find time away from the classroom to do my own work. I finally found the time during this year's spring break to knock out two paintings from those photos.

My favorite thing to do is faces, but this time I wanted to try some abstract painting. I did an abstract as a novice, and it was missing something - so because I love to do faces, I cut one of them out that I had previously drawn and stuck it right in the middle, and that seemed to do the trick!!!

Peonies and lemons

This piece came from my imagination 100%. It started on a rainy day, and I was thinking of beautiful flowers, and peonies came to mind, and they happen to be my favorite. Faithful, I thought well, why not display them with a bowl of lemons, which I love lemons as well, so it strictly comes from my imagination and is a little celebration of two of my two favorite things.

I've been inspired by all the spring blooms recently and decided to paint a small landscape featuring them, along with a simple little church in the background. I create my art pieces, believe it or not, right in the middle of my dining room floor. And yes, it is messy. Using acrylics, tissue, and string, this multi-medium abstract piece fell together with a swing of a brush and a ponder of space.
A free hand a mixture of shades of blue and black, set the simple piece alive. And a sprinkle of green is found amongst the flow and form. I see an alive universe in this 48 by 48 creation.

Although there is now a new, much larger, more modern St. Joseph Catholic Church in the area, it will never garner the original effort and sacrifice it took for the settlers of Sykesville to mount this beautiful stone tribute to their faith and community on top of a hill above the train station and railroad. I tried to capture the solidity of their faith in placing the stone forward with an upward glance toward the heavens.

There was a Waterfront festival on September 27, 2025. I happened to be at the festival, which is a hidden gem of an event. At the same time, they had a Windsurfing contest in the inlet where the beach is. They also had an unofficial speedboat race, which I am painting now. I squatted in front of a bunch of pictures. This is version 1; other versions are coming from other perspectives.
