The gorgeous sets of flowers on OM’s bar top are from our amazing friends in the Baltimore Dem. Socialists POC meetup! The group was so thoughtful to present flowers and the most touching card to the OM sisters during their happy hour last week 🥰

Thank you, Baltimore Dem. Socialists, for creating community in our space and for showing us such love. We love you back! ♥️

It’s Smörgåsbord Friday, and we’ve got a slew of activities tonight! Our doors open at 6 p.m. Join us for karaoke, board games, painting and, of course, food and drinks 🍴🍸

After 7 p.m., we’re looking forward to spending the evening with two of our favorite Baltimore action and advocacy groups! The is holding its POC happy hour, and the Baltimore Federal Unionists Network (F.U.N.) is also holding its “heat check” happy hour. Both and Baltimore F.U.N. have wonderful memberships and are looking to grow with those who are in solidarity!

Also this evening, Baltimore-based artist (Mina Monsha) is holding Sounds & Colors, an immersive photo exhibition exploring the interplay between visual tones and auditory emotions.

Thank you to everyone who has messaged, commented or called in regard to our last post. Your words—ranging from touching to hilarious—have really lifted our spirits and we are encouraged by the greater community’s outrage against bigotry and the outpouring of love ♥️ To update you, we have made steps to hold that person accountable (let’s just say the police are very familiar with her). We also did a temporary fix for the lights ☺️

Incidents like this, especially when committed by one doggedly hateful individual over the years, can be unsettling. But we love what we do, and we are ready to transition to normalcy.

If you are not familiar with us, we love books and reading here at OM, and we are holding our regularly scheduled Baltimore Silent Book Club at 6:30 p.m. We invite you to bring a book (audio, electronic or paper) or any reading material with you. Our doors open at 6 p.m.—grab food or drink, and come mingle with other book lovers before we transition to a period of reading.

If you are interested in practicing your Spanish, we will also hold a language exchange this evening, too. All levels are welcomed.

OM is a safe space for many of all backgrounds, and we will continue to be that for as long as we are meant to do this. Thank you for your support—let’s continue to fight against hate together!

Thank you for caring ♥️

***Trigger warning: racial slurs***

We recently posted about OM’s newly installed string lights and the safety and charm they have brought to our corner on Herkimer and South Carey Streets. The work was performed by a licensed contractor with a permit through a grant from Southwest Partnership.

This past Sunday, a longtime difficult neighbor informed our cook that she had a problem with the lights, even though the lights do not extend in front of her house. On Tuesday night at approximately 9:10 p.m., she pulled down the guide wire attached to the tree in front of her home; it was a plain wire with no lights that attached to the tree. The vandalism resulted in the lights in the front of our building and the adjoining property falling. We were made aware late Wednesday afternoon and devoted considerable time examining our cameras in order to confirm what took place and who did it.

For years, we have endured harassment from this particular neighbor in the form of racial slurs toward us, homophobic slurs against our guests, dog f***s left on our steps, watermelon thrown over our fence, false statements about the business and being followed and spat at, among other things.

Adding to the complexity is that this person avails herself of OM’s community service efforts. She attends our weekly food giveaway and benefits from our weekly block cleanup by . When her dog attacked her and she was bleeding profusely all over the sidewalk, we called for emergency assistance for her.

We are sharing this because we believe it is important for people to understand what can happen while just minding your own business. As small business operators with regular challenges, this latest incident angers and frustrates us.

Nonetheless, hate cannot dim OM’s path. The lights will go back up.
