"In many ways, these works reflect an education system that feels worn thin: patched together, inherited, and full of gaps where more honest conversations should be. Like fabric beginning to fray at the seams, the structures meant to hold collective history together often reveal their own contradictions. I’m interested in those fractures; what gets preserved, what gets erased, and who gets centered within the stories we’re taught to remember." - Sara Kaltwasser, artist

Join us on Friday for our next "Artists in Conversation: Creative Collaborations" artist talk. In honor of Juneteenth, Denise Kumani Gantt and Allison Duggan will reflect on collaboration, personal power, platform-building, and the responsibility Black artists carry within systems that shape public life.

Presented in conversation with Sara Kaltwasser’s exhibition TATTERED, this discussion considers the fragile state of democracy, the politics of education, and the ongoing threat of cultural erasure. As Flag Day and Juneteenth arrive within the same week, the gallery becomes a space to question what national symbols represent, whose freedom is celebrated, whose histories are protected, and whose stories are repeatedly placed at risk.

Through theater, visual art, film, storytelling, and community-based practice, Gantt and Duggan will explore how Black artists have long resisted erasure by building platforms, preserving memory, creating institutions, and insisting that community truth remain visible.

NEXT FRIDAY, June 5th, join us during Highlandtown Arts District First Fridays for the opening reception of TATTERED, a new solo exhibition at SBM Gallery by artist Sara Kaltwasser

TATTERED is an overview of sara kaltwasser’s work as she explores how American identity is shaped through history, symbolism, and education. Working across painting, collage, and fiber, she examines the ways nationalism, mythologized history, and constructions of power are introduced and reinforced through visual culture and systems of learning. By combining flags with lined notebook paper, she creates tension between inherited national narratives and the spaces where those narratives are first taught.

Her work is rooted in the fractures within these systems, what is preserved, what is omitted, and how collective memory is constructed. Ultimately, kaltwasser asks viewers to reconsider the stories they inherit and the role education plays in shaping how history is understood and remembered.
