MICA is honored to invite you to the exhibition reception for “Making America Again: So Strong, So Brave, So True” — inspired by Langston Hughes’ 1935 poem and curated by Dr. Leslie King-Hammond (Graduate Dean Emerita, Founder of MICA’s Center for Race and Culture) and Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims (Curator Emerita of the Museum of Arts and Design).

This landmark exhibition brings together artwork by the Ford/Philip Morris Foundation Fellows for Artists of Color (1985–1999) — a distinguished cohort whose work has shaped the national and global art world.

🕔 5:00 – 7:00 PM

Join us for light food and remarks from MICA President Cecilia M. McCormick, Dr. Leslie King-Hammond, and Dr. Lowery Stokes Sims.

Featuring work by Candida Alvarez, Dawoud Bey, Sanford Biggers, Nick Cave, Sonya Clark, Stephanie Dinkins, Espi Frazier, Bill Gaskins, Lyle Ashton Harris, Cynthia Hawkins, Napoleon Jones-Henderson, Joe Lewis, Tom Miller, Joyce Wellman. It also includes artists such as Joyce J. Scott, Oletha Devane and Lola Flash who preceded this cohort, as well as artists who came to MICA in the wake of the program such as Jerrell Gibbs, Monica Ikegwu, Jeffrey Kent, Amy Sherald, Shinique Smith, Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum and René Treviño.

In 1985, MICA launched a groundbreaking initiative — supported by the Ford Foundation and Philip Morris Foundation — to increase representation of artists of color in the visual arts. Led by Dr. King-Hammond, it was the only program of its kind in the nation, and its impact is still felt today.

This exhibition celebrates that legacy while reaffirming MICA’s commitment to expanding the art historical canon and advancing equity and artistic excellence.
