Sisters Freehold

Sisters Freehold Fertile Ground for Something New Sisters Freehold is transforming theatre by eliminating barriers to entry.

02/12/2025

From the Board of Sisters Freehold:

At Sisters Freehold, all staff, board members, and collaborating artists formally agree to abide by the Freehold Theatre Standards, a voluntary tool for self-governance that seeks to nurture communication, safety, respect, and accountability of participants at all levels of theatrical production. These standards specifically prohibit harassment on the basis of gender.

As such, we were surprised and dismayed to learn of a social media post made on Wednesday, January 22, 2025 by one of our founders and artistic directors which was disrespectful in nature toward the transgender community. The post was not reflective of the values of Sisters Freehold or of the Freehold Theatre Standards, which may be reviewed in full at www.sistersfreehold.org/fts.

Sisters Freehold does not tolerate harassing or hateful speech and has formally parted ways with the author of the post. With understanding that the post caused injury to a community we are striving to honor and serve, we express our profound apology and reiterate our commitments to safety, respect, accountability, and inclusion. As we value transparency we would like to share that Sisters Freehold is currently pausing our operations to reexamine how to best honor our values, serve our community, and bring down barriers in theatre in a lasting way, and this process may take some time. Questions or feedback about this matter may be directed to members of our board, Justyne Paxton at [email protected] and Daniel Adegbesan at [email protected].

“I was born of flesh and fear and rot
and yearning and abstaining from joy.

I am the moment before succumbing to starvation
and the gaunt hand reaching for meat at the feast.

I have gone by many names.
Feast.
Famine.
Blessings.
Destruction.
Awe.
Envy.

But you...you may call me yours.”

Theatre, meet Momo Mullings.

They're an interdisciplinary Liberian-Jamaican writer and artist devoted to the strange and ominous. Momo's work takes chunks of flesh and bone and asks the viewer to find it beautiful.

They were one of two poets chosen to represent the University of Maryland, Baltimore County in the 2019 Baltimore Book Festival’s University Writers Series.

They create a monthly newsletter on Substack called Be Soft, Write Feral. They are the founder of Black Zine Archive ( on Instagram).

Their work has been published in giallolit, High Shelf Press, Burning Jade Magazine, SWWIM, and Inkwell Black.

And their new play, Eat, Lolo, Eat, is being performed for THE VERY FIRST TIME tonight & tomorrow only.

Tickets are still available!

The Horticulture Playwrights Workshop process is one year long. 6 months in, program director Abby Cady matches each playwright with a director.

We're beyond lucky to have MacKenzie River Foy teaming up with Momo Mullings on their play, Eat, Lolo, Eat!

MacKenzie is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer, culture worker and archivist. She is the founding creative director of Village X, a culinary fiction studio producing zines and short films, and a Valerie J. Maynard Foundation Intern at the Baltimore Museum of Art.

Working full time as a digital media strategist, most of MacKenzie's days are spent developing communications campaigns and producing news stories. In defiance of the number of hours in the day, they have also made time to write, direct and assist dramaturgs for plays at the Georgetown University Black Theatre Ensemble, Arena Stage in DC, and the Public Theatre in NYC.

We LOVE a collaboration. Catch MacKenzie's staged reading of Momo's new play this weekend only!

Flashback to late April 2024, when we gathered to hear Momo Mullings' Eat, Lolo, Eat out loud for the very first time! The energy in that room was FANTASTIC.

Momo's play--which follows Lolo, a young, fat, Black woman as she searches for the boundaries of rage and vengeance--resonated deeply with the folks around the table. It's poetic, it's dark, and it takes you places you won't often see onstage.

Eat, Lolo, Eat was developed here in Baltimore through Horticulture Playwrights Workshop with the help of many generous souls (some of whom are pictured here).

We think it's just the thing for spooky season.
Catch it Oct 18 & 19 only!

“You can see the ocean from here.

When the fog clears,
I’ll show you the ocean that I crossed to love you.

And I’ll try, I’ll try to point out where I came from.”

Ya'll need to know Karen Li!

She's a Baltimore based performer with a Theatre and Dance double degree from UC San Diego.

Recent work in the DMV area includes Exclusion (Arena Stage), Babel (Contemporary American Theater Festival), AAPI Voices (Kennedy Center), The Boundary (Submersive Productions), Black Super Hero Magic Mama (Strand Theater), and the AAPI Women’s Voices Festival (Strand Theater). Other favorite theater credits include The Great Leap (Perseverance Theatre), Sunset Park (Theaterlab), Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots (La Jolla Playhouse), and Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (Chinese Pirate Productions for San Diego Comic-Con). Karen’s TV credits include Dancing with the Stars (Season 10).

She is a competitive ballroom dancer, a Michelin-starred sommelier, and produces immersive dinner theatre as the founder and artistic director of Consume & Company.

And her new play, From East, Like the Sun, is being performed for THE VERY FIRST TIME tonight & tomorrow only. Tickets are still available!

Halfway through the Horticulture Playwrights Workshop process, we welcome directors to the cohort. Each pair is carefully matched by program director Abby Cady.

We're so lucky to have Jalice Ortiz-Corral working with Karen Li on her play, From East, Like the Sun!

Jalice is a writer, director, and stand-up comic from Baltimore. She studied in London, where she earned an MA from Royal Holloway University and an MA from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.

After completing the 2020 Soho Theatre Writers’ Lab, she returned to Maryland where she has stage managed and directed at many local theatres. She is currently the Marketing Coordinator at Everyman Theatre.

We LOVE a collaboration. See Jalice's staged reading of Karen's new play this weekend only!

Horticulture Playwrights Workshop is all about giving playwrights space to write, collaborate, experiment, and grow. Over the course of a year, playwrights go from an idea to a public staged reading of the fully written piece.

Back in May, we took a stop on that journey to hear Karen Li's work-in-progress play read out loud. It was sweet, funny, and beautiful, tackling heavy concepts with grace and humor.

And the discussion that followed--about generational trauma and ghosts and teens getting into trouble and housing inequity and Chinese food--was fantastic!

Karen's idea has evolved to become a new play called From East, Like the Sun. She grew it here in Baltimore with the help of many fine folks (some of whom are pictured here).

You can be one of the first to experience this brand new work of art on October 4 & 5 at Lovely Lane Methodist Church in Baltimore. All tickets are pay-what-you-will, with a suggested donation of $15.

Sisters Freehold is THREE!!

Holy sh*t.

Three years of growing & building & making plays (and plans).

The audiences and the artists are HERE for it. We love you!!

But we're just three very part-time humans with families and pets and multiple pay-those-bills-jobs. This work is only possible through your continued generosity.

So here's the thing:

This is a make-or-break year for us. Go big or go home, right?

We're serious about our mission--as well making it sustainable.

The only way we keep this momentum going is with your help:

Will you help us raise $10,000 before June 5th?
